MILWAUKEE ART MUSEUM is Hiring a Youth & Family Programs Assistant 1 Near Milwaukee, WI

Job: Part-time, Temporary, Non-Exempt, Non-union, Grant-funded
Hours: Vary according to event schedule. Evening and weekend work required. This is a seasonal position that will run through the Summer school break (approx. late May/early June through late August/early September).
Supervisor:  Director of Youth & Family Programs

General Purpose: Assist with Youth and Family programs and activities. Welcome and engage a multi-generational youth and family audience in creativity-engaging experiences that register deeply, and build lasting, positive impressions that connect with the Museum’s special exhibitions and Collection. 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • Work to create a welcoming environment for youth and family audiences to make art together in the community. Assist with setting up the space, including setting up materials and equipment such as easels, tents, and tables. Greet families and teach hands-on art activities. 
  • Assist with preparing, maintaining, and organizing supplies for Kohl’s Art Studio events. 
  • Work to increase awareness of Museum programs while out in the community. 
  • Collect surveys. 
  • Take part in youth and family training and meetings as assigned. 
  • As assigned, function as Lead for the Day: note staff attendance, lead set up/break down of event, communicate projects and details to working staff, communicate any issues or changes to designated MAM point of contact/s, record visitor attendance, write summary and take photos of event. 
  • Implement and/or assist with special projects as assigned, including working youth and family programs at the Museum. 
Requirements

Education/Experience Requirements: Strong background in studio art, art education, or art history. Experience working with children and multi-generational audiences. Positive customer service experience. Need to be creative, personable, and organized with excellent communication skills and attention to detail. Developing ongoing understanding of the Museum’s Collection and special exhibitions required.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to:

  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, pull and/or move objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds and up to fifty (50) pounds with assistance.
  • Move about the museum, campus offices, and offsite programming locations
  • Balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch upon occasion
  • Assess art materials
  • Work with a variety of art materials and tools
  • Remain in a stationary position for up to six hours per day
  • Communicate, discuss, and exchange information with teammates, event organizers, and public. 
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Constantly positions self to assist visitors and maintain supplies and environment
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close and distant vision and ability to adjust focus.

Excellent interpersonal skills, systematic, meticulous, reliable, patient, self-starter and works well under pressure. Manages time efficiently, analyze and solve problems independently and if necessary, collaboratively. Ability to be flexible and embrace changes within this position due to departmental priorities. Ability to work with a wide variety of people to achieve the goals of the Museum.
