Midwest Laboratories is Hiring an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist Near Omaha, NE

Description

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist will conduct research for the purpose of identifying, abating, or eliminating sources of pollutants or environmental hazards and create plan of action to safely mitigate the problem. In addition, an environmental health and safety specialist will analyze current operational processes and performance, recommending solutions for improvement when necessary.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Generate and maintain documentation related to Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) initiatives.
  • Contribute to administration of EHS programs.
  • Serve as adviser to safety committees and teams.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental compliance and compliance audits.
  • Work to ensure continuous improvement opportunities within EHS.
  • Document inspections and other EHS requirements.
  • Routine inspections of safety equipment.
  • Work with teams, and lead investigations and prepare appropriate written reports for leadership review.
  • Conduct internal EHS audits to verify compliance levels. Evaluates site EHS management system, procedures, and implements changes to maximize effectiveness and sustainability.
  • Provide technical guidance to management and employees to minimize risks associated with tasks, assignments, production/manufacturing, and facilities (includes work done at the location and at customer locations).
  • Review new processes, equipment, and chemicals from an EHS perspective and ensure appropriate controls are established prior to introduction into the workplace.
  • Deliver EHS training on required regulatory, corporate, and site-specific topics.
  • Handle record confidentiality and follow the policy on information release.

Requirements

Education and Training: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Science, Engineering or similar technical course work or degree emphasis
  • Minimum of five (5) years of HSE experience in manufacturing, construction, field service or utilities
  • Experience with OSHA laws and requirements, and OSHA reporting.
  • Experience with EPA RCRA laws and requirements, and Reporting. 
  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain one.
  • DOT Hazmat Training 
  • Through understanding of EHS regulatory requirements and professional best practices

Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to interact and work effectively with people at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to effectively solve problems and make sound independent decisions.
  • Analytical judgment, problem solving skills, accuracy and detail oriented.
  • High level of proficiency with PC based software programs
  • Advanced laboratory skills
  • Service oriented attitude
  • Self-motivated
  • Able to maintain focus on key objectives.

Physical Requirements:· 

  • Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms and shoulders repetitively to operate a keyboard and other office equipment.
  • Ability to continuously operate a personal computer for extended periods of time (4 or more hours)
  • Ability to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably with sufficient volume to ensure accurate exchange of information in normal conversational distance, over the phone and in group setting.
  • Mental acuity sufficient to collect and interpret data, evaluate reason, define problems, and make valid judgement and decisions.
