Mesa Associates, Inc. is Hiring a Remote Physical (Outdoor) Substation Group Lead

Mesa seeks a Physical (Outdoor) Substation Group Lead who will be responsible for overseeing the design of deliverables associated with substation physical/outdoor design projects. Assigned tasks will include managing a small team of engineers, designers, and/or drafters who are responsible for the creation of substation engineering packages utilizing MicroStation, AutoCAD, and Inventor. This position will report to the Program Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a small team of individual contributors (2-5 team members).
  • Manage assigned Physical projects to meet schedule & budget while producing high quality design products.
  • The selected candidate will be responsible for producing all engineering deliverables with a high level of quality.
  • Provide detailed checking (QA/QC) of all engineering deliverables.
  • Ensure that Mesa's quality assurance plan is implemented and followed on all projects to ensure a base level of quality is maintained.
  • Perform occasional site visits as needed. Normally less than 5% annually.
  • Perform and oversee scoping of various proposed substation upgrades.
  • Mentor all assigned direct reports. Teach lesser experienced employees the nuances of Substation Physical engineering and design.
  • Coordinate design activities with other disciplines as required to establish a complete design package.
  • Perform or check supporting calculations (Grounding, Lighting, AC/DC, and Lightning Protection)
  • Assists project or program managers in estimating projects and developing scope of work for assigned projects.
  • Identifies training needs for staff and budgets, plans, coordinates, and conducts training as required.
  • Evaluates work performance of personnel and provides feedback to direct supervision.
  • PE or ability to obtain PE within 2 years is a strong advantage but not required. The successful candidate may eventually PE stamp construction prints.

Location Requirements:

The selected candidate is expected to report to the Knoxville, TN office on a full time basis. Consideration will also be given to report to our Chattanooga, TN office with periodic travel to the Knoxville office. After the candidate has established a satisfactory work history, there will be an option for a hybrid in-office/remote work arrangement.

Experience

  • 5 year(s): Applicable Substation Physical design experience.

Education

Preferred
  • Bachelors or better in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Bachelors or better in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field
  • Associates or better in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Bachelors or better in Electrical Engineering or related field

Licenses & Certifications

  • Prof Engineering (PE)
