POSITION TITLE : Senior Grant Writer
POSITION TYPE : Full-time (40 hours); exempt
PAY RANGE : $66,000 - $72,000 annually
REPORTS TO : President & CEO
HOURS :

  • Hours: 9 am - 5 pm Monday to Friday; some weekends; flexibility is required
  • Hybrid remote work flexibility
  • Must be located in the San Francisco Bay Area and able to attend local San Francisco/SF Bay Area community events and activities

ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OF SAN FRANCISCO (MHASF)

MHASF is a mental health peer-run nonprofit located in downtown San Francisco serving people and agencies across the Bay Area since 1947. As mental health consumers ourselves, we center the lived expertise of people with mental health challenges in our advocacy, education, and support programs, and believe that dignity and recovery in mental health are something everyone can experience. Our staff is dedicated to creating spaces for learning and healing around stigmatized and under-resourced areas in mental health-hoarding and cluttering behavior, peer employment support, wellness & nutrition, community-based crisis response, service navigation, and more. OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM AND POSITION

MHASF is rapidly growing and seeking a Grant Writer who will work in partnership with the President and CEO, Department Directors, and Program Managers, in identifying, preparing and writing grant and RFP/RFQ proposals.

The successful candidate for this role will facilitate research and development, write, review, and edit departmental and/or association grant proposals. They will independently seek out grant and funding sources and maintain a tracking system that identifies the status of applications and awards.

Additionally, they will develop and maintain an annual grant calendar, support staff and leadership team in developing proposals. Responsibilities will include writing in-depth and accurate pieces that can be used to help funders, contractors, and donors understand the details of MHASF's programs and services.

TOP 3 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary grant proposal writer for MHASF; research grant application opportunities, grant guidelines, and prepares grant applications accordingly for submission to government agencies (local, State, and Federal), foundations, and/or donor agencies
  • Develop and manage a grant database and information/tracking of grant applications and reports
  • Work with departments and programs to track grant progress and manage grant reporting requirements GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Grant Writing

  • Draft various agency profiles and case documents, programmatic descriptions for funding proposals, progress reports, and other technical writing/review needs when required
  • Lead proposal writing and submission support, including drafting content and assisting with preparation of scopes of work
  • Assist with program design and programmatic evaluation metrics under guidance of CEO and directors and work with and MHASF's fiscal department to develop proposal budgets

Grant Searching

  • Independently seek out grant opportunities that are a potential fit for the organization and presenting the options to the CEO and other key decision-makers
  • Meet with directors and managers to determine funding priorities and seek out grant-specific opportunities
  • Research, monitor, and evaluate mental health grants and market trends to inform grant seeking activities while working with department directors to identify continued grant funding for existing programs and projects

Grant Administration

  • Coordinate MHASF's processes for responding to requests for proposals (RFP) and other funding opportunities, including development of competitive applications
  • Problem-solving to strengthen efficiency of internal systems to track and administer contracts and proposals and streamline application and renewal processes
  • Attend pre-bidders/pre-proposal meetings and conferences and generate minutes to present to CEO and directors for go/no-go decision making
  • Coordinate with grant project leads to package grant applications for submission in a timely manner

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • BA/BS degree, preferably in the social sciences, public health, social welfare, epidemiology or two or more years of professional experience in non-profit development
  • Proven track record of grant applications leading to funding for organization programs and projects at $10,000 and up level
  • Successful applications to local and state government grants including SFDPH, DHCS, HHS, etc.
  • Strong understanding of program and project budgets for grant applications
  • Superb grant-proposal writing and editing skills with the ability to convey program initiatives and distillation of concepts for a variety of audiences
  • Solid understanding of best practices in grant writing and institutional giving
  • Professional-level computer skills including Microsoft Office applications and web-based collaboration/communication tools (Salesforce and Asana a plus)
  • Self-starter and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Awareness and understanding of mental health stigma and discrimination
  • Behavioral health knowledge, including familiarity with psychiatric diagnoses, psychiatric symptoms and associated behavior, psychiatric medications, and substance use issues
