The Role

Great stories told by the news media are called "earned" for good reason. MediaSource is seeking a candidate with experience networking with news reporters and earning positive media coverage. What you will be responsible for:

  • Confident in developing and maintaining beneficial relationships with journalists at key outlets, from local to national media. Has daily interaction with the news media in order to achieve client goals, secure insights and feedback and contribute to future strategies.
  • Proactively and independently secures and coordinates coverage for clients across paid, earned, shared, owned media with a heavy focus on earned media outcomes.
  • Stay current on the news and be ready to connect client interests to emerging trends.
  • Understand and contribute to the strategy so that you and the team can consistently secure strategic media coverage for clients in cancer, healthcare and health and wellness related organizations.
  • Discovers and develops strategic and brand-right story ideas that will generate positive media attention for MediaSource clients.
  • Understands the range of clients goals and match tactics to accomplish those goals.
  • Take ownership of public relations projects to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Understands the basics of budget models, scope and resource allocation for projects and departments and can make resource responsible day to day decisions.
  • Establishes priorities for work assignments, monitors progress, reviews work products and ensures products are delivered in a timely manner.
  • Coordinates with other departments on project timing of upcoming stories and anticipates public relations steps.
  • Assume progressively expanding job responsibilities including direct client interactions on key accounts and potential to manage smaller to midsize accounts.
  • Embraces the company culture and vision.

Requirements

Who you are:

  • Developing leadership skills, ability to work with a team, collaborate and delegate
  • News junkie who monitors the evolving earned media landscape and understands how the media works.
  • Strong news judgment and creative thinking ability resulting in innovative approaches which garner earned media results and help meet clients’ goals.
  • Relationship builder, not afraid to pick up the phone, meet in person and talk one on one with journalists and clients.
  • Ability to balance client sensitives and priorities with news media demands for consistently positive outcomes
  • Excellent writer and editor of materials for news media.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail with ability to keep on track with goals and duties and update internal staff on a regular basis of progress.
  • Success in this position requires the ability to take initiative and ownership of responsibilities and tasks assigned, and the ability to adapt to changes in requests and direction.
  • Must have the ability to work on multiple projects at once and be comfortable with multitasking and meeting deadlines without reminders from management.

Experience:

  • 4-8 years experience in public relations
  • Background in cancer, healthcare or science communications preferred
  • Proven experience and success in media relations and client relations
  • Journalism/newsroom experience is helpful
  • Proficient in Google Workspace, media databases and project management programs.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism or strategic communications preferred.

Location: MediaSource is located in Columbus, Ohio. This is a hybrid role based in the Central Ohio area that includes both remote working and workplace-based in person collaboration which takes place at a minimum of once per week.
