General Description:
Position includes scheduing patient appointments, greeting patients in a courteous and professional manner, verifying health insurance benefits, obtaining all necessary authorizations and referrals, updating patient demographics and collecting patient payments. Communicate with nurses and providers about patient appointment statuses, as needed. Works closely with billing to ensure accurate and timely patient insurance and demographic updates and ensures that daily patient charges are submitted. In addition, the position's assignments and scheduled hours may vary to provide quality health care.
Duties: Patient check-in and check out. Verify patient insurance elibility and complete demographic updates. Collect co-payments and patient payments on accounts.
Answer phones and schedule appointments and procedures.
Assist with patient questions related to referrals, authorizations and insurance. . Follow-up with patient intake information.
Sort and distribute incoming faxes/paprwork. Update chart notes.
Respond to medical record requests. Maintain updated knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding. Submit charges to billing department.
Verify the need for authorization, pre-certification and/or medical necessity determination. Obtain and document insurance authoriztion prior to scheduling requested services. Accesses the patient's EHR to provider documentation to the insurance company when requested. Communicate effectively via phone, fax and other methods with insurance companies, specialists, providers, staff and pateints concerning referral and prior authorization of medical services. Review all forms for accuracy and completion prior to acceptance.
Maintain forms and office supplies required for front desk activities.
Maintain a clean and orderly waiting area, including reading material.
Participate in communication with the clinic and public relations programs. Attend office meetings and participate in special projects as assigned. Demonstrate a professional attitude and approach with pateints while ensuring confidentiality of patient and practice information.
Maintain strictest confidentiality. Adhere to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations.
Perform other duties as assigned. Exhibit flexibility in the workplace and take initiative in offering to help other colleagues when needed.
Participate in performance improvement and quality assessment.
Skills/qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required. One year experience working in a medical office setting preferred. Able to communicate with pateints and staff. Make an excellent first impression and present the office in a positive and professional manner. Able to multi task and accomplish much with many interruptions. Aware of the need for discretion and confidentiality relating to patients. Willing to accept orders and to perform repetitive tasks.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a physician office environment. Involves developing and maintaining effective relationships with medical and administrative staff, patients, vendors and the public. Communications may involve dealing with difficult, persistent or upset people. Requires a full range of body motion including, but not limited to, bending. lifting, finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing, walking and/or sitting for extended period of time along with the potential for irregular hours.
