McGraw Hill is Hiring a Director of Metadata Near New York, NY

Overview

Impact the Moment

At McGraw Hill we create best-in-class, next-generation learning platforms that are used by millions of students and educators worldwide every day. We design intuitive and effective tools and experiences that maximize teachers' time and students' learning. And we do all of this in a supportive and collaborative environment where we work alongside brilliant colleagues, touch lives around the world, see the difference our hard work makes, and continue our paths of lifelong learning.

Your impact on team:

For the role of the Director of Metadata, we are looking for a versatile learning and assessment professional who can provide expertise in working with learning standards, objectives, and/or competencies (e.g., state K-12 educational standards or professional medical competencies) while communicating and coordinating with curriculum, product, and technical teams across McGraw Hill's main business divisions. The successful candidate will join an emerging metadata team helping to drive innovative learning experiences with careful measurement, rich analytics, and AI-accelerated tools.

This is a remote position open to applicants within the United States.

What You'll Do:

  • You will collaborate and communicate with subject area experts and product managers to develop and manage skill/competency ontologies in diverse subject areas, as well as controlled vocabularies and other metadata attributes.
  • You will collaborate with learning and data scientists to ensure measurement quality for learning-related metadata.
  • You will provide guidance to and coordinate with technical staff to develop and expand capabilities and tools supporting metadata management and usage.
  • You will help develop and maintain documentation on metadata and its uses for product and design teams.
  • You will monitor external developments in metadata standards and coordinate with technical partners to ensure that McGraw Hill is prepared for such developments.
  • You will use data tools from spreadsheets to database queries to programming languages to identify complex metadata requirements, explore internal and external metadata use cases, and suggest potential enhancements.

We're looking for someone with:

  • Advanced degree in educational measurement, learning sciences, or a related field.
  • 10 years of experience in educational assessment and measurement with at least 5 years of direct experience working with educational standards and/or professional learning competencies in construct definition and differentiation and in assessment item-construct alignment.
  • Strong fluency with state educational standards in Math and Literacy or with education competencies in Medicine.
  • Strong communication skills, especially in translating technical assessment details to non-specialist audiences.
  • Familiarity with relational database queries and/or working with data sources via R or Python.

Preferred:

  • Strong fluency with the state educational standards in Science and/or Social Studies.
  • Experience working with taxonomies and/or ontologies, particularly those focused on competencies and/or assessment.
  • Experience designing and implementing educational recommendation systems.

Why McGraw Hill?

  • We firmly believe in the mission of educating students and helping them succeed.
  • Our teams operate in a collaborative and safe environment where everyone's input is valued, trusted, and respected. We want to know what you think; we don't want "feature farms!"
  • You'll have opportunity for horizontal and vertical movement and growth throughout the organization, including clear career paths for your long term personal and professional growth. We hire good people rather than filling team vacancies or checking boxes for technical skillsets.
  • We have a mindset of "deliver value, not features": we produce meaningful products and services for our students, teachers, administrators, and others that further our educational mission rather than focus on just executing a JIRA ticket number; we "see the forest, not the trees"

The pay range for this position is between $150,000 - $175,000 annually, however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location. An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
