This position will support projects within a 2-hour radius of Hickory, North Carolina and must be willing to travel to jobsites. Overnight travel is required.

Responsibilities

As a Survey Field Technician, you will obtain and compute field data relevant to measure the Earth and other manmade features. You will assist Surveyors in the documentation, surveying, and inventorying of site features through points, elevations, lines, and areas for digital map making, land surveying, topographic mapping, utility verification, and professional design. You will operate and maintain field equipment including rods, tripods, tribrachs, electronic data collectors, total stations, robotic instrumentation, RTK and static GPS, and auto levels. You will be responsible for understanding and properly coding field data to allow "field to finish" CAD and digital terrain model (DTM) production. You will also be responsible for field establishment of robust geodetic survey control networks on project sites.

  • Set up, adjust, and operate surveying equipment, including data collectors, static/RTK GPS equipment, conventional and robotic total stations to measure angles, distances, elevations, and record attribute data for collected survey features.
  • Perform field calculations in survey data collector.
  • Properly code field data to allow “field to finish” CAD and digital terrain model (DTM) production.
  • Read, plot and locate written metes and bounds descriptions pertaining to easements and land parcels.
  • Communicate with Surveyor in responsible charge to ensure field survey data meets company standards.
  • Perform static Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys including proper documentation and notes for required for producing geodetic survey control.
  • Perform RTK GPS surveys including proper documentation and field networking required for producing secondary geodetic survey control networks and point measurements.
  • Open, measure, and notate specific details for stormwater and sanitary sewer, manholes, catch basins, and inlet structures, including pipe invert depths, pipe materials and interior pipe diameters, and pipe network connectivity.
  • Prepare field notes and drawings of work completed.
  • Download raw field data from data collectors, field books, GPS sessions and cameras daily.
  • Assist Surveyors, Technicians, and CADD Operators with survey details, labeling, notations, and troubleshooting for surveyed field work.
  • Use McGill’s survey database and digital task lists daily to log job field raw data status, monitor surveying budgets, and communicate and document project related issues and information.
  • Communicate with engineering and other design staff as needed to provided clarification certain surveyed features.

. Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in Surveying or higher preferred with experience in field data collection and standard surveying field procedures including the use of data collectors and surveying instruments
  • Valid driver’s license
  • General understanding of principles and practices of land surveying (uses and capabilities of survey instruments, including GPS equipment, data collector, total stations, and leveling instrument/procedures)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Reliable, self-motivated, engaged, and team-oriented
  • Strong problem solving and technical skills
  • Must have the physical ability to work outdoors in all weather for extended periods of time and be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to travel and work on projects throughout North Carolina and the surrounding states
