Instructional Coach Scope, Responsibilities and Outcomes

The role of the Instructional Coach is vital to the growth and development of teachers within our school. As a professional guide, the Instructional Coach establishes a trusting relationship with teachers during the school year while supporting with lesson design, classroom management, assessment procedures, and instructional practices. Through the development of MPA’s resources, and facilitate learning opportunities for their assigned teachers.

Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and provide individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as delegated by school leadership.
  • Assist teachers with instructional decisions based on assessment data based on student needs.
  • Provide support for classroom motivation and management strategies, improvement plans and follow through to ensure maximized used of instruction time for enhanced student learning.
  • Model effective, differentiated instruction when requested and as needed per walkthroughs and observations and per individualized improvement plans. Provide ongoing professional development for all teachers including cultural sensitivity.
  • Assist teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.
  • Work collaboratively and collegially with other Instructional Coaches, curriculum specialists and district specialists for maximum alignment of support.
  • Work with the Superintendent’s designated administrators to design and provide professional development focused on improving alignment and delivery of the written, taught and tested curriculum to increase student success and close performance gaps.
  • Provide job-embedded professional development for teachers through modeling engaging, standards-based teaching as needed.
  • Instructional coaches to provide daily individual and/or group instructional coaching to teachers of grades K-12 to improve classroom instruction for all learners.
  • Provide daily observations/walkthroughs, teacher improvement plans, coaching and timely follow through using approved GPS Solutions forms and protocols. Provide supervisors (Principal, department lead, Superintendent, and Director of Mentoring and Coaching) with weekly schedules of completed walkthroughs and observations, as well as meeting minutes including any handouts, training notes and/or resources. * Train instructional staff to develop and implement instructional strategies that target student needs and enhance student achievement.Building Blocks for Instructional Coaching

Instructional Coaching begins with developing a professional learning relationship between the coach and the teachers through building a common experience and knowledge base. This foundational work is an on‐going part of a professional learning community. This knowledge base creates a common vocabulary among staff and promotes the articulation of ideas for improving instruction.

Commitment to a professional relationship between a coach and an individual teacher takes the work of common experiences to deeper levels of collaboration. At the beginning, the building of congenial relationships begins with shared knowledge and new understandings for change in practices. After providing background content, context and data, the coach and teacher(s) begin to collaboratively articulate purpose for new teaching practice, assess need using student assessment(s), and make plans for implementation. Next the coach and teacher collaboratively create a teacher growth plan, share in lesson planning and team teaching. This provides common ground for discussions on specific instructional strategies and their impact on student learning and achievement.

Instructional Coaching Plan Development

Identification of Instructional Coaching “caseload” based on collaboration with school leaders surrounding: Classroom observations, interactions, teacher effectiveness (grades, test scores), teacher experience, etc. Growth Plans are solidified when determination has been made on which teachers are in greatest need of instructional support. Instructional Coach conducts initial walkthroughs for every suggested teacher and observes for an entire instructional hour.

Instructional Coaching Plan Implementation

1. Conduct needs analysis to determine project content related goals

2. Review Comprehensive Needs Analysis and School Improvement Documents for MPA.

3. Meet with administration to identify needs, understand calendars and schedules

4. Create Professional Development and Instructional Coaching

implementation plans

5. Meet staff, introduce the team and scope of work

6. Convene meetings with identified staff

7. Conduct observations and collect baseline data

8. Implement walkthrough protocols, share data with teachers and

administration

9. Provide feedback with notes and observation data to administration 10. Implement 10-12 week Instructional Coaching Protocols

11. Share coaching, PD evaluation, and project data with stakeholders

12. Participate in continuous improvement process to see what is working, what is not, what needs to be improved

13. Evaluate current caseload of supported teachers to see if transitions are necessary

14. Work with staff to support comprehensive needs analysis, Program

Evaluation Tool completion, and school improvement planning

Expected Outcomes

  • Teacher behavior and. practice will positively change
  • Students will experience academic and behavioral lift
  • Teacher and leader capacity will be built

Qualifications/Education

  • Must possess a Bachelor’s, Master’s, Specialist or advanced degree in elementary or secondary education, administration, curriculum, or related field.
  • Must possess a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate.
  • Must provide evidence of instructional leadership for a minimum of three years in the K-12 space.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $65,000.00 per year
