This is a temporary non-benefited student position. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position performs customer service duties including assisting customers on the sales floor; answering questions and phone inquiries; checking in, pricing, and stocking merchandise; counting inventory; operating cash register to sell books, supplies, sundries, and other related merchandise.
This position receives and disburses money in our Bookstore establishment. Processes credit/debit card and cash payments using Point-of-Sale system while providing excellent customer service and accurate cash handling. Daily duties to include: placement and removal of merchandise on the sales floor, housekeeping duties and processing of customer orders both online and in-person.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately rings up customers using Point-of-Sale (POS) system, receives payment of cash, credit card, debit cards and gift certificates, and bags customer's purchases.
  • Provides excellent customer service to shoppers, greeting customers upon entering and leaving the store. Listens to customers' complaints politely and refers them to management for appropriate resolution as needed.
  • Follows Daily Assignment List issued by management which includes duties such as sorting and shelving books, pricing books and merchandise, identifying merchandise as "new release", placing new merchandise on sales floor, creating window and in-store displays in an attractive manner, and keeping the store stocked with fresh merchandise.
  • Keeps all areas of the store clean and neat. Assists in housekeeping duties, including sweeping, cleaning windows and other miscellaneous surfaces when necessary.
  • Reports any incidents of theft or unauthorized possession of company to management immediately.
  • Must be available Monday through Friday.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Education/Experience: High School Diploma (or GED) preferred. The candidate must be self-disciplined, able to work independently and be able to problem solve as needed. Basic English language writing skills.
Computer Skills: Basic use of computer and computer related equipment/software.
Other Requirements: Must have been awarded and accepted Federal Work-Study for 2023-2024. Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress for financial aid. Successfully pass a background check. Must be able to understand the basic principles of running a retail store: stocking, merchandise flow, quotas, cash handling, performing simple arithmetic tasks, following procedures and college established guidelines both in written and unwritten format. This position requires you to stand for extended periods, lift and carry up to 30 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One year or more of prior merchandising or marketing experience.
  • Prior experience attending or familiarity with the community college setting.
  • Cashier and/or retail experience.
  • Bilingual

Paid Sick Leave
Student employees (work study and student help) accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. A sick leave balance not to exceed 40 hours will be carried over into January each year.
On-site Childcare Center
Theis a state licensed program that offers high quality childcare for children ages 1 month through kindergarten entry to students, staff and faculty. The center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The program is a participant of the Washington State Early Achievers quality rating and improvement system and rated a level 4-Quality Level of Excellence. Our teachers are trained in the Early Childhood Education field.
