Job Description
Primary School (K-5) Lead Teacher
Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 330 students in NW Washington, DC, seeks a Primary School Lead Teacher. We seek candidates to join our Primary School beginning at the start of the 2024-2025 academic year. The Primary School Lead Teacher reports to the Primary School Director and is a member of the Primary School Division.
Education and Experience:
- A bachelor's degree or higher in elementary education or a related field, master's degree preferred.
- A minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching experience.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of elementary-age students.
- Well-versed in best practices for delivering language arts, mathematics, and social studies instruction.
- Experience with Responsive Classroom and a commitment to progressive education.
- The ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- A commitment to inquiry and project-based learning.
- Wholehearted support of the mission of the school.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Cultivate and sustain a community of learners in the classroom where each individual is honored and respected.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive, age-appropriate math, language arts, and social studies curriculum.
- Leading morning meetings using a Responsive Classroom approach.
- Be attuned to each student's academic progress, social-emotional skills, and positive identity development.
- Communicate effectively with students and families.
- Collaborate with other classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators.
- Engage in ongoing professional development that supports the experience of students and aligns with schoolwide initiatives.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.
- Long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
