Job Summary

The Director of Kingman Island is a valued member of the Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region team, with responsibility for providing strategy and planning for Kingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area, uplifting our goals of promoting recreation, education, and conservation in this public green space, managed in partnership between Living Classrooms and the District Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE). General goals are to increase community and political investment toward goals of preserving and bettering the human experience by engaging youth and adults in education and volunteer activities geared toward utilizing and enhancing the natural resources of Kingman Island. 

The Director of Kingman Island is responsible for overseeing the safety of the visitors and staff on Kingman and Heritage Islands and ensuring quality community engagement. The Director supports the Ranger Manager in coordinating maintenance efforts of trails, grounds, and facilities by the Kingman Island Ranger team, focusing on diminishing environmental impact and increasing visitor experience. In addition to providing training to carry out tasks on the Islands, the Director will work to provide transferable skills to Seasonal Rangers in the workforce development program as well as growing the skillset of a full time Ranger staff.

The Director of Kingman Island will support the LCF-NCR Environmental Education Managers in providing environmental education programs at Kingman Island primarily for District youth from Wards 5, 6, 7, and 8. The Kingman Island Director will also engage volunteers and community members in activities in line with Kingman goals and strategies, including Green Boats, as well as participate in community meetings and planning processes related to Kingman Island improvements. 

The Director also oversees the Trash Cage project at 14th and Gallatin Sts in NE DC as well as the Ranger team that manages the daily operations of the trash cage. 

This person must be an individual who is a self-starter, problem-solver, team player, and is flexible to changing schedules and programs.

Core Responsibilities of Management:

    • Manages operations at Kingman and Heritage Islands Conservation Area, including Island project planning, community engagement, partner activities, and volunteer programs. Oversees the development, coordination, and implementation of projects and maintenance of Kingman Island facilities.
    • Maintain a work plan to complete all grant deliverables for all grants that fund LCF-NCR work on Kingman Island and at the Gallatin St Trash Cage. The Director of Kingman Island works with Kingman Island staff to ensure strategic planning is converted to yearly work-plans and metrics for Kingman Island.Work with Ranger Manager and any other staff who are direct reports to develop annual, monthly, and weekly (as needed) work plans, goals and actions, and metrics for staff to measure achievement.The Director is not on site for all operations but maintains a weekly plan with the Ranger Manager for daily operations that support grant work plans and program goals.
    • Complete narrative reporting and approve financial reporting in a timely manner as outlined by each grant. 
    • With support from the Managing Director, maintain budgets for all grants funding Kingman Island, as well as the overall program budget, tracking expenses and providing timely expense reporting. Manage spending for program.
    • Regularly communicates with LCF-NCR and DOEE Kingman Island staff about use of facilities and equipment, as well as security and ordering of supplies. Ensure employees, volunteers, students and other participants are equipped with materials, supplies, equipment and personal protection equipment to ensure success and safety. Assemble and maintain cleaning and maintenance supplies necessary for restroom maintenance, dock and bridge maintenance, as well as any future built structures by purchasing and organizing materials.
    • Regularly communicates with DOEE staff about Kingman education programs, resources, and facilities, including attending bi-weekly meetings with the Director of DOEE and other Kingman DOEE staff, as program schedules allow. 
    • Maintain working relationships for strategic planning internally with Living Classrooms as well as externally with multiple government organizations including DOEE, but also DMPED, DDOT, DPR, DOES, District Council, and other local NGOs that also operate programs on Kingman Island, to develop, enhance, and achieve goals for the Living Classrooms Kingman Island program, always consulting first with DOEE for any collaboration. Assist with providing professional input and facilitating community input to long-term planning of Kingman Island. Coordinate with DOEE and contractors, as needed, for access to Kingman Island.
    • Maintain internal Kingman Island calendar for use of the space by LCF, partner orgs, schools, and other entities. Maintain file of Certificates of Insurance for partner orgs and waivers for any program participants.
    • Supports LCF-NCR's Environmental Education team’s efforts to provide environmental education programming on the Islands by coordinating maintenance and access to outdoor classroom spaces and providing staffing as needed.
    • Work with Communications to maintain the Kingman Island website with relevant volunteer and education program offerings and events calendar. Create a strategic plan for social media with the Director of Communications.
    • Communicate parking needs with local entities as required. Filters all volunteer program requests and assigns staffing, planning, and ensures that insurance and waiver requirements are met.
    • Oversee the development, coordination, and implementation of programs for the Trash Cage at Gallatin St.
    • Supervise the Green Boats Coordinator and support occasional on-call weekends for this program.
    • Adhere to Living Classrooms’ and DCPS (District of Columbia Public School) emergency procedures regarding student/staff sickness, injury, overall safety, etc.
    • Always maintain professionalism as an important representative of Living Classrooms Foundation.
    • Regularly meet with LCF-NCR leadership for collaboration with other LCF-NCR programs.
    • Work with Managing Director and LCF Development to shape the long-term vision for Kingman Island programs and in securing funding to support that vision through grants. Coordinate with Development and Communications team for fundraising, events, marketing, communications, and other needs.
    • Assist in other communication and fundraising efforts for LCF-NCR as requested.
    • Such other duties as are necessary for the operations of the program, the Foundation, or as assigned by the Managing Director.

Core Responsibilities for Ranger Program:

    • Maintain trails and perform other outdoor maintenance duties on Kingman Island as needed to maintain a safe environment, quality visitor experience, and maintain the integrity of the conservation area.
