We have an immediate opportunity for Director of Nursing.

General Summary: The Director of Nursing (DON) manages the organization, development, management, and administration of day-to-day nursing activities. The DON maintains nursing service goals, objectives, and standards of nursing practice; adheres to staffing plans; and nursing department policies and procedures in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The DON is actively involved in department activities, transdisciplinary team activities, and LifeCare activities to ensure individualized, patient centered health care for all patient populations admitted to LifeCare Hospitals.

Patient Population: Delivers direct patient care appropriate to the patients served. The ages of the patients served are adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older).

Essential Functions:

  • Manages and directs nursing services and clinical education to ensure the highest possible delivery of service and care to the patients, families, and physicians
  • Ensures that hospital systems, policies and procedures provide how patient nursing care needs are assessed, evaluated, and aligned with evidence-based practices. Assist in the ongoing development and implementation of improved services and coordinating transdisciplinary relationships that will meet the needs of the patient.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of department operations and capital budgets for nursing services. Assists in the management of expenditures within approved budget.
  • Enhances department’s ability to meet patient needs. Plans and anticipates admissions, transfers, and discharges of patients, including appropriate placement.
  • Provides, delegates and/or assists others in delivering complex care to population served demonstrating competent and proficient nursing practice. Serves as a leader in all emergency situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Ensures that rounds are made on all patient care units to determine adequacy of planning and implementation of care.
  • Assists the nursing units in direct patient care as needed to ensure quality patient care. Serving in the role as house supervisor and/or staff nurse, when appropriate.
  • Reviews schedules to ensure adequate staffing on all shifts and units for the provision of safe, quality patient care. Collaborates with staffing coordinator and nursing supervisors to adjust staff, as necessary, by transferring individual staff members from one unit to another, arranging and approving necessary overtime and/or unscheduled shifts and calls in relief staff.
  • Provides appropriate documentation and communication of information such as the condition of critically ill patients, patient admissions and discharges, patients scheduled for surgery, staffing, and unusual occurrences to assure continuity of care and appropriate utilization of resources.
  • Responsible for planning the appropriate utilization of resources, maintaining, or improving the work environment and monitoring and improving the quality and appropriateness of care. Responsible for staff development, resolution of employee concerns, corrective actions, terminations, and overall employee morale.
  • Assesses problem situations related to patients, families, visitors, staff and/or physicians. After thorough investigation, plans and implements corrective action as needed. Evaluates action taken and communicates results to direct supervisor. Maintains and models effective working relationships with all hospital employees, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
  • Coordinates and facilitates all hospital activities in the event of a disaster, in accordance with the hospital’s Disaster Plan.
  • The knowledge and skills necessary to perform position requirements are demonstrated through the successful completion of competencies established for the position, to include population served, and other special needs of patients and customers, served by the department.
  • Adheres to LifeCare policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

Requirements

Supervision: Supervises the function and the employees of the Nursing Department.

Experience: Two to five years of nursing experience in an acute/critical care environment setting including previous supervisory experience.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in an approved Registered Nurse program. Master's preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Current Registered Nurse license in the state where practicing is required. Current BLS certification is required and ACLS certification is required within six (6) months of hire. The Director of Nursing must maintain current licensure, BLS and ACLS certifications while employed with LifeCare Hospitals.
