Liberty Science Center is Hiring a Science Camp Nurse Near Jersey, NJ

The Role Liberty Science Center (LSC) is seeking a qualified RN/LPN to serve as our nurse during our Science Camp this summer. Our Camp Nurse is an integral part of our camp community overseeing the health and safety of our campers, including responding to medical situations, dispensing approved prescription and over-the-counter medication, reviewing documentation, maintaining accurate medical records, and other duties in support of camp operations.

The Science Camp Nurse will report to the Associate Director of Specialized STEM Programs. What You’ll BringEnthusiastic, empathetic, and patient, you work well with young people who are in firstgrade through eighth grade as well as adults who work tirelessly on behalf of childrendaily. You exhibit a high degree of professionalism and discretion but also are flexible and come to work with a sense ofhumor daily.What You’ll Do

  1. Review camper medical paperwork submitted electronically through CampMinder, including allergy information, immunization records, and pre-existing medical conditions to ensure campers’ safety
  2. Monitor camper Care Plans for completion comparing with medical data
  3. Provide first aid care for campers and camp staff
  4. Report all health and dietary alerts to camp management on a weekly basis
  5. Assist on daily lunch checks to ensure camper dietary restrictions are adhered to
  6. Maintain on-site, written parental consent for emergency medical treatment
  7. Maintain both electronic and handwritten medical logs, updating as needed
  8. Document all care given during camp
  9. Document all medications brought to camp ensuring: all medications are labeled and stored in the original container or prescription container, as applicable, and in accordance with manufacturer instructions; all medications are stored in a secure area that is inaccessible to the campers; all unused medication is returned to campers’ parents or guardians within three business days after the campers’ last day (if unable to return medication, destroy any remaining medication)
  10. Document campers’ medication information including: the condition for which the medication is being used; cautionary information specific to the medication, instructions for administration including dosage and frequency of administration, date, time, and name of the person administering the medication to the camper, medication error, adverse drug reaction; inform the prescribing physician of any medication error or adverse drug reaction
  11. Administer proper dosage of prescribed medication at the correct time with written consent from parent, guardian, or physician
  12. Notify Camp Administration and LSC Security of emergency medical needs
  13. Ensure the main first aid kit is replenished weekly and prepare traveling first aid kits for field trips
  14. Provide a copy of the parental medical consent and camper allergy report to LSC staff chaperoning off-site trips
  15. Provide ongoing communication to Camp Administration with respect to camper information, health status, behavior observations, camper interactions, anecdotes, etc
  16. Communicate with parents in regard to medical forms, camper incidents, or other times when necessary
  17. Following NJ regulation guidelines for registered camps: assist in the preparation for onsite health inspection; assist with and document all scheduled fire/emergency drills
  18. Other responsibilities, as needed

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Knowledge of common childhood illnesses, rashes, and communicable diseases common to youth and summer camp setting
  2. Understanding of food allergies
  3. Strong diagnostic skills
  4. Clinical skills, physiological knowledge of medical terms and practices
  5. Prior experience with children and young adults
  6. Good bedside manner, friendly and personable
  7. Responsible, hard-working
  8. Strong organization and communication skills
  9. Proficient with electronic recordkeeping or Google Workspaces

Preferred Qualifications Copies of all professional licenses and certifications must be provided prior to start.

  1. A current registered professional nurse license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Nursing (registered LPN or RN)
  2. 2 years of experience as a school or camp nurse, a huge plus
  3. Current First Aid certification
  4. Current CPR / AED certification
  5. Current policyholder of Professional Liability Insurance
  6. Must be able to administer an Epi-pen
  7. Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations

Classification and Schedule This is a seasonal position, and applicants must be available to work a full-time schedule for the duration of the summer camp from June 24 through August 23. The Camp Nurse is to be present and available at all times during daily camp operations: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. 

  1. The desired start date for this position is June 24th
  2. The desired end date for this position is August 23rd. Ending dates may be flexible to accommodate school schedules

This position is an exempt seasonal position that is not benefits eligible.

CompensationThe hourly rate for this position ranges from $35-$45 per hour, commensurate with experience. Liberty Science Center also provides perks for all eligible part-time employees, including:

This position requires daily engagement with children and so the ability to move around and provide care for them is an essential function of the job. The ability to transition through the museum (walking on concrete floors, climbing stairs, etc.) and be outdoors (walking on uneven ground, exposed to the elements) and tolerate moderate to high levels of noise at times is required.
