Lenawee County, MI is Hiring a Legal Secretary II Near Lenawee County, MI

Perform responsible clerical work involving a law office or court, specifically relating to the processing and preparation of criminal files.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the general supervision of Legal Secretary III/Office Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which an employee may be expected to perform.

  • Preparation of all district court files including: letters to agencies, subpoenas, dismissals, motions, writs, forensic forms, etc.
  • Process all attorney appearances and discovery demands; complete discovery processes in Karpel for cases and copy electronic materials to send for discovery purposes
  • Prepare and follow up on all subpoenas prior to the subpoena date (verify that the trial is still scheduled, check on any unserved subpoenas, and pay special attention to medical, expert, and law enforcement subpoenas).
  • Contact witnesses when necessary
  • Make travel arrangements for out-of-state or out-of-town witnesses when necessary.
  • Communicate with Prosecutor's regarding subpoena issues or any other known issues.
  • Answer calls, take messages, and/or schedule appointments for the assigned Prosecutor.
  • Follow up with Prosecutor's to complete docket dispositions.
  • Close all files, including dismissals, data entry and closing processes in Karpel, and notifying law enforcement agencies of dispositions
  • Perform related work as required.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION, ESPERIENCE and/or QUALIFICATIONS: An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training, qualifications and/or experience.

  • Graduation from an accredited high school
  • Relevant college degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience performing responsible clerical work, preferably involving a court, law office, or police agency
  • Proficient use of modern computer programs and office equipment
  • Considerable speed and accuracy in data entry
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities
  • Ability to demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and courtesy at all times
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is primarily indoors and requires standing and sitting for extended periods
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
  • Must be able to hear and speak over the phone and in one-on-one communication needs
  • Must be able to see and notice the needs of clients
