LAWYERS' COMMITTEE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER LAW is Hiring an Associate Counsel/Counsel/Senior Counsel- Digital Justice Initiative Near Washington, DC

Elevate your career while making history - become a key player in our mission for racial justice.

About Us: The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is one of the nation’s leading national racial justice legal organizations. Formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy, the Lawyers’ Committee uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real.

The Opportunity: We are seeking a dynamic and driven attorney to join our team as Associate Counsel/Counsel/Senior Counsel. In this role, you will lead the charge in the fight against discrimination, employing a range of legal and advocacy-based strategies. Your work will encompass investigations, impact litigation, public policy, and regulatory advocacy, all aimed at advancing digital justice, safeguarding civil rights online, and combatting surveillance and disinformation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Investigations: Spearhead investigations, identify plaintiffs for impact lawsuits, and develop groundbreaking cases.

  • Legal Expertise: Conduct legal research and craft compelling legal memoranda, briefs, and other critical documents.

  • Litigation: Litigate in federal and state courts, including appellate courts, guiding strategy, development, and management of civil cases.

  • Research: Dive deep into highly sensitive subjects, including white supremacist and hate group activities.

  • Collaboration: Foster effective relationships with law firms, expert witnesses, consultants, and non-profit co-counsel.

  • Client Engagement: Collaborate closely with organizational and individual clients in litigation and advocacy efforts.

  • Communication: Occasionally engage in public speaking and contribute public-facing articles, reports, and materials.

  • Advocacy: Represent the Lawyers’ Committee in coalitions, with the media, and in meetings with members of Congress and federal agency staff.

  • Stay Informed: Monitor developments and stay updated on new technologies and data practices impacting racial justice, civil rights, and equal opportunity.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with colleagues across Lawyers’ Committee units to identify and pursue shared advocacy objectives.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have five or more years of legal experience, including significant civil litigation experience, and demonstrated familiarity with digital justice issues. The extent of legal experience that will be suitable for a candidate will depend on the extent of the candidate’s familiarity with digital justice issues, and vice versa. Other preferred qualifications include:

  • Litigation Prowess: Significant complex civil litigation experience, including investigations, strategy development, fact and expert discovery, experience in examining witnesses, brief drafting, motions practice, and trial.

  • Tech and Civil Rights: Familiarity with technology and civil rights issues, such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, online harassment, content moderation, biometric technologies, anti-discrimination laws, Section 230, consumer protection laws, or similar topics.

  • Innovative Thinker: Strong analytical skills, ability to learn new technical subjects, develop novel legal strategies, and apply traditional civil rights laws in new contexts.

  • Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, building trust, credibility, and collaboration with partners both internal and external.

  • Community-Centric: Demonstrated experience working with and for communities of color and/or low-income communities.

Minimum Requirements and Competencies:

  • Passionate Advocate: Deep commitment to advancing civil rights and racial justice.

  • Legal Acumen: Law degree from an accredited school.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of legal experience (8 years for Senior Counsel).

  • Bar Membership: Active membership in the District of Columbia bar or the ability to waive in.

  • Research and Writing: Strong legal research and writing skills.

  • Collaborative: Organized and adept at collaborating with multiple partners.

  • Travel: Willingness and ability to travel as needed for cases and client matters.

Ready to Make an Impact? If you're a dedicated advocate for civil rights, racial justice, and equal opportunity, we want to hear from you. Join us in our mission to create lasting change and be a part of our dynamic team!

Apply Today: Shape the future of civil rights law and advance racial justice. Submit your application and help us make a difference.
