Pay Range

$98,610 - $126,636 Annual (TSS.1)

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an electrical engineer-in-training or California licensed Electrical Engineer for the High-Performance Computing (HPC) program who will provide engineering analysis and design support for building and high-performance computing systems projects. This position is in the Project Management Office (PMO) and matrixed to the Livermore Computing Directorate.

You will

  • Perform technical tasks associated with the engineering analysis, planning, design, and construction of projects associated with the High-Performance Computing's building electrical distribution system and operation of the data centers.
  • Design electrical systems predominantly for HPC system and building construction projects including power distribution systems, lighting, grounding, and other systems. Apply National Electrical Code and institutional standards to design solutions associated with LLNL's electrical infrastructure.
  • Prepare technical drawings, specifications, and calculations (e.g. load flow, branch, short circuit, arc flash, system reliability, relay coordination, motor starting, etc).
  • Review designs prepared by subcontracted engineers for code and standard compliance, and constructability.
  • Assist in determining functional electrical requirements for new or modified specialized equipment and support systems.
  • Represent the organization in providing engineering solutions to a diverse range of facility electrical technical issues and/or problems associated with specific projects.
  • Partner with electrical supply vendors to select, specify, and procure electrical components utilized in designs.
  • Provide engineering support during construction by reviewing submittals and shop drawings, responding to contractor questions, evaluating change order requests, resolving field problems, and performing inspections.
  • Plan and coordinate critical system outages in a 24/7 operating data center.
  • Assist in electrical commissioning and systems retro-commissioning planning and coordination.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and electrical engineering design experience in an architectural/engineering consulting firm.
  • Certification as an engineer-in-training and ability to get professional registration as an Electrical Engineer in the State of California within five years.
  • Experience preparing electrical one-line diagrams, load studies, branch and short-circuit analysis, arc flash calculations, electrical building layouts, area classification drawings, and size relative electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and understanding of load studies, branch and short-circuit analysis, and arc flash calculations.
  • Knowledge and experience of electrical distribution systems for data centers regarding design, construction, operation, reliability, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and experience in design work with the application of electrical power distribution system components such as transformers, switchgears, switchboards, distribution panelboards, motor control centers, automatic transfer switches, uninterrupted power sources, backup generators, lighting, and grounding systems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate in a team environment and present technical information to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Software Skills: Experience using AutoCAD and Revit to prepare design drawings and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
