Equipment Operator I

Low Maintenance Crew
General Description:
Entry-level position responsible for operation of light equipment used in maintenance of
restricted canal banks. Equipment may include but not limited to, light trucks, tractors, mowers,
mini-loaders, mini excavators, chainsaws, boats and other similar equipment. Work is
performed under the direct supervision of the Crew Leader who reviews work for completion
and ensures adherence to instructions and established standards.
Essential Job Functions:

  • Operates public works maintenance equipment such as light trucks, tractors, mowers,
trailers and chainsaws and other similar equipment as part of the maintenance of
District’s canals, structures and Right-of-ways.
  • Follows field safety and security protocols and ensures safe operation of all equipment
used in mowing and tree/vegetation removal operations. Ensures safety and personal
protective equipment is properly utilized.
  • Evaluates work conditions prior to beginning work and takes measures to ensure a safe
work environment. Promptly reports and/or resolves any potential safety issues.
  • Ensures all equipment and supplies are properly maintained and operating effectively
and efficiently. Promptly reports any maintenance issues.
  • May work with Licensed Applicator – drive boat with spray rig or truck with spray rig
along canal right-of-ways to apply herbicide treatments.
  • May assist in the loading of herbicides, either on the boat or truck; and assist in the pouring
of herbicides into the truck spray rig or the boat spray rig.
  • Performs all duties, pursuant to safety guidelines, as set forth by the Licensed Applicator
and/or Crew Leader.
  • May work as trainee operator on more complex types of trucks and equipment.
  • May be temporarily assigned to work on other crews as needed, including general
maintenance work of District facilities.
  • Operates other machinery and performs other job duties as assigned.
  • May be cross trained with other crews as assigned including Aquatics, Tree or Heavy
Equipment.
  • As part of District’s emergency response role, position may be required to work before,
during and after major storm / rainfall events and emergency situations such as
hurricanes or other declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience
Typically has a high school diploma or equivalent. Possession of a valid Florida driver’s
license. Some demonstrated experience in the operation of maintenance equipment is
preferred. Experience with hauling small trailers and equipment helpful but not required.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • Knowledge of equipment, tools and materials used in mowing and/or the removal of
trees and vegetation.
  • Knowledge of maintenance servicing requirements, operation and adaptabilities,
limitations and safety precautions of assigned equipment/tool assigned.
  • Ability to detect improper functioning mechanical systems on assigned equipment/tool.
  • Ability to read and write and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual work for extended
periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

Essential Physical Skills:

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without correction)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without correction)
  • Ability to communicate orally.
  • Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over)
  • Equipment operation
  • Distinguishing colors
  • Reaching, climbing, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, balancing, crawling, and
pushing.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Works outside in various weather conditions, with regular exposure to hot/humid
environment, dust and noisy conditions.
  • In or around moving vehicles or equipment
  • Heights
  • Uneven surfaces
  • Radiant and electrical energy
  • Due to District’s emergency management response role, position is required to provide
support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations.

SALARY RANGE: $16.50 - $19.50/Hour ($34,320 - $40,560/Year)
