Kings County is Hiring a Child Support Specialist I/II Near Hanford, CA

The Kings County Child Support Services is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team in administering vital child support services. As a Child Support Specialist, you'll play a crucial role in supporting families and ensuring children receive the financial support they need to thrive. Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. The expected life of the eligible list is six months.

SALARY
Child Support Specialist I: $18.63 - $22.74 Hourly; $38,750.40 - $47,299.20 Annually
Child Support Specialist II: $20.58 - $25.12 Hourly; $42,806.40 - $52,249.60 Annually
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Child Support Specialist classification series is utilized in the Department of Child Support Services. Child Support Specialist I is the trainee level; incumbents work under close supervision so that the consequence of error is minimized. As assigned responsibilities and knowledge increase, incumbents may reasonably expect to advance to Child Support Specialist II when the minimum requirements have been met and satisfactory performance has been demonstrated.
Duties include but are not limited to those described below. 
Under close supervision, interviews persons involved in child support matters; obtains and verifies information through office and telephone interviews and letters to individuals; evaluates records, documents and other information to determine responsibility and ability of individuals to provide child support; explains office policy and office legal procedures; learns to interpret and apply Federal/State rules and regulations on child support matters; within scope of assigned responsibility, initiates appropriate legal action to obtain enforcement of support orders, establishment of paternity and/or child support, location of absent parents and related matters; refers cases and/or questions to more experienced staff when necessary; may testify in court; maintains daily logs pertaining to caseload; utilizes computer terminal to monitor caseload and payment records; accesses criminal records, credit reports, tax records and other resources in child support cases; prepares statistical and investigative reports. Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:
LEVEL I:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Experience: One year of extensive public contact experience involving interviewing and obtaining information, preferably in collections, credit, eligibility, legal field or other related experience.
Note: A Paralegal certification or Child Support Specialist certification from an accredited college in California may be substituted for the required experience. ORSix months experience as a Child Support Assistant in the Kings County Department of Child Support Services or equivalent experience in another IV-D child support agency may be substituted for the required experience.
LEVEL II
Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Experience: One year of experience as a Child Support Specialist I in Kings County or equivalent Child Support classification in another IV-D agency.
BOTH LEVELS:
Special Requirements: Ability to type with speed and accuracy at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the position; ability to qualify for security clearance through a background investigation and fingerprint check. Note: Certain positions in this classification may be required to work irregular hours as assigned.

Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the examination process may include a screening committee (pass/fail) and/or written examination (pass/fail) and/or an oral examination (100%) which may include a written practical component to determine placement on the eligible list. Note: The top 40 written test scoring applicants with passing scores will be invited to participate in the oral examination interview process.
