King County is Hiring a Senior Engineer (Engineer III) Near Seattle, WA

King County Road Services Division, Engineering Section is currently seeking a self-motivated, team-oriented Senior Engineer (Engineer III) to join a highly collaborative and talented team of engineers on a diverse portfolio of roadway, drainage and bridge projects. This position will work with many disciplines to develop and contribute engineering expertise to support capital improvement projects and grant applications in the Engineering Section.

Our ideal candidate should enjoy collaboration with others. This Senior Engineer should be experienced in engineering, technical editing, facilitation, and project management. The candidate should possess strong written and verbal communication skills, embrace technology, and is calm in the face of emerging issues or shifting priorities.

The position will work with project management teams across the Engineering Section on many aspects of engineering including design and management of road, drainage, and bridge projects.   • Collaborate with multiple teams of planners, engineers, financial team members, and other subject matter experts to support grant applications. Provide technical analysis as needed to meet grant requirements.
  • Prepare technical documents to support complex grant proposals such as project background, scope of work, cost estimates and project schedule, including project information for grant opportunities.
  • Perform civil engineering design and project management of road, drainage, and/or bridge design projects in support of a multi-disciplinary team and under the direction of a supervising engineer.
  • Develop and review drainage, roadway, and/or bridge design plans and specifications in accordance with King County standards and environmental regulations.
  • Organize and maintain accessible files, reports, and other records related to grant-funded projects in division-wide SharePoint sites, shared drives, network, and databases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering (BSCE) or closely related field in transportation planning, engineering, or equivalent training and experience
  • Demonstrated experience in civil engineering including drainage, roadway, and/or structural design and knowledge of grants applications, preferably in the field of transportation.
  • Experience in developing and reviewing bridge, drainage, and/or roadway design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Experience in project management of project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Experience with technical writing for various engineering reports and supporting documentation.
  • Strong presentation skills, including preparing and delivering presentations for a diverse range of internal and external partners/audiences.
  • Analytical thinker with an authentic and collaborative approach to work with an understanding of the importance of building effective relationships with team members and partners.
  • Attention to detail with strong follow-through.
  • Culturally aware and comfortable having complex and challenging discussions about race and diversity in the workplace. Effectively contribute to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Excel, Word, Project, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to remain calm in the face of tackling emergent issues and shifting priorities.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Knowledge of GIS (or similar tools) to perform simple geospatial analyses and map production. 
  • A Valid Washington Professional Engineer (PE) License or the ability to transfer license to Washington State within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience in use of AutoCAD for engineering plan preparation.
  • Comfortable using a variety of technology to gather data and conduct technical analyses (e.g., SharePoint, PowerBI, Airtable, and other internet-based data sharing and project management tools). 
  • Experience with LEAN principles and focused on continuous improvement.

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • A Valid Washington State Driver's License

INTERVIEW SCHEDULE:

WORK SCHEDULE:  The work week is normally Monday through Friday, 8.00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may at times require work outside of normal business hours. This position is Non-Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act and is eligible for overtime pay, with prior supervisor approval. 

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS: This position has been designated Non-Mission Critical) - Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed, suspended, or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical.

Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive, department director or agency head, all employees, regardless of designation, are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather. TELEWORKING REQUIREMENT 

This is a hybrid position. The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking, onsite work and meetings as needed. The responsibilities of this position will include regular and ongoing in-office work. 

Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
 
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
