Karuna Therapeutics is Hiring a Remote Senior Medical Science Liaison/Executive Medical Science Liaison (IL, WI, MN, ND, and SD)

Position: Senior Medical Science Liaison/Executive Medical Science Liaison (IL, WI, MN, ND, and SD)

Position Summary

Reporting into the MSL Field Director, the Senior Medical Science Liaison (MSL)/Executive MSL are field-based roles focused on developing and maintaining professional relationships with key medical experts and decision makers as they relate to company products. Collaborating compliantly with colleagues from Medical Affairs and other corporate functions, the MSL engages in scientific exchange and enters into strategic discussions as they relate to medical/clinical, and health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) data with health care professionals. These include, but are not limited to, individual physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, researchers, managed markets, medical and pharmacy directors, hospital decision-makers, formulary committees, consultant pharmacists, state Medicaid decision-makers, and others.

Responsibilities

Senior MSL

  • Develop and maintain peer-to-peer collaborations and relationships with key medical experts to deliver meaningful outcomes and improve the way our clinical and scientific customers deliver care to the patients they serve
  • Serve as a clinical and scientific peer-to-peer resource to external disease experts and internal stakeholders
  • Support the medical community with up-to-date medical information, robust disease expertise, clinical data, and product information
  • Communicate clinical insights on new data and the relevant disease states to Karuna Medical Affairs and other internal stakeholders to inform strategy, and contribute to data collation, trend analysis, and reporting to internal stakeholders
  • Train internal stakeholders on key scientific and medical topics
  • Develop an understanding of the regional landscape relevant to the disease state and products of interest to Karuna
  • Participate in, and lead, field team activities at relevant medical congresses
  • As a medical representative of the company, communicate key information about the company and its mission; provide key scientific and clinical information about Karuna's products; provide a conduit for communication between Karuna and the medical community regarding ideas for future research with Karuna products; gather medical insights from the field about the therapeutic area treatment landscape, clinical experience with Karuna's products, and appropriate competitive intelligence; and provide corporate value through demonstrated leadership and participation in strategic thinking
  • Develop an overall strategic territory plan in addition to individual plans for external experts to provide needs-based, value-added support of the medical and scientific community in-line with company goals
  • Support interactions with investigators and potential investigators in conjunction with ongoing and planned clinical trials and support the evaluation of Investigator Initiated Research proposals
  • Assume a leadership role by assuming responsibility for special projects as they arise related to both Medical and Clinical Affairs activities

Executive MSL (inclusive of the above)

  • Serve as an extension of the field leadership team by serving as the point person for strategic field initiatives. Work with the field leadership to determine a tactical plan to achieve a strategic objective and take a lead role in the execution of tactics.
  • Be seen as a subject matter expert on the team in the disease states of interest to Karuna serving as a resource to the team and other internal colleagues
  • Participate in and contribute to the development of the annual field medical plan
  • Represent field leadership on committees and during meetings as the need arises

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in medical/biosciences (i.e., MD, PhD, PharmD, DPH, EdD, etc.) AND a minimum 3-5 years of MSL experience
  • Current MSL experience in psychiatry and schizophrenia with proven track record of establishing, maintaining, and enhancing effective and successful collegial relationships with external experts.
    • The Executive MSL will also have at least 10 years of experience in the disease state(s) of interest to Karuna with established relationships within his/her assigned geographical area.
  • Strong broad-based scientific and pharmaceutical knowledge as well as excellent presentation and teaching skills
  • Excellent level of experience and confidence speaking about drug information/disease state
  • Excellent working knowledge of the pharmaceutical corporate environment and appreciation for Commercial Operations, including Marketing and Sales strategies
  • Excellent working knowledge of relevant regulatory and compliance issues related to the MSL role
  • Analytical thinking with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as required, in a fast paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members
  • Uses teamwork to work cooperatively toward the most effective solutions, championing the best ideas of team members, and assisting where help is needed
  • Fluent in English (verbal and written)
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, allowing for an open and effective dialogue throughout the company
  • Ability to influence without direct authority
  • Attention to detail and quality and highly accountable for results and outcomes of responsibilities
  • Understands the impact of individual efforts, results, and attitudes on others
  • Results-oriented individual who is highly motivated, decisive, creative, and flexible in thought
  • Forward thinking mindset with the ability to manage multiple projects, and identify and resolve issues
  • Broad experience in an emerging, publicly traded company environment is a plus
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to travel 50-75% (domestic)
