Description of Camas Foundation

The Camas Foundation is a 501c3 public charity, created by the Kalispel Tribe of Indians based on an overarching Big Idea: “promoting physical, mental spiritual and social wellness for our Kalispel people and neighbors in the communities in which we live”. Our Vision: The Camas Foundation intends to promote wellness for the Kalispel people and its neighbors. We want to improve the health-physical, mental, spiritual and social-of our Tribe and the communities in which we live. We accomplish this vision by focusing on Language and culture education, quality healthcare access, and prevention. Our first area of focus is on language, and cultural heritage. To promote wellness, we need to first focus on individuals- supporting their connection to their cultural heritage, their families, and communities. Wellness begins with the individual. We cannot heal our communities until we heal ourselves. 

Summary of Functions

The Executive Director provides leadership for the Camas Foundation. The Executive Director (ED)works closely and collaboratively with Camas Foundation board, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, and their businesses and program entities, and community partners to advance the “Big Idea” of the Camas Foundation. The ED will shape and communicate the vision and strategic direction of Camas Foundation and volunteers and ensure that the organization is well-managed and accountable to the board. Key responsibilities include program leadership, community relations, advocacy, fundraising, financial management and administration, and partnering with and supporting the board. 

The ideal candidate will be an inspirational leader, strategic thinker ,and a commitment to systematic change able to build a shared vision and understanding to advance the Camas Foundation in Washington state and beyond. This includes demonstrated prowess in advocating and promoting policy, equity, social and racial justice initiatives. They will build coalitions and teams and cultivate the skills and abilities of the Tribe and their partners. We seek an innovative, business-savvy, data-driven, and heart-centered leader who can think broadly and understand the nuances of the communities served by the Camas Foundation. Strong relationship building and a human-centered approach are important to the work. The ED will be a supportive and open-minded leader who is able to prioritize and organize resources in support of programs and priorities as determined by the “Big Idea” of the Camas Foundation and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. The ED must possess the skills to work collaboratively with Camas Path, the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, the Employees of Northern Quest, and the other business subsidiaries of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians.

Opportunities for Impact

RELATIONSHIP BUILDING/MEMBER RELATIONS:

A key priority for the new ED will be holding meetings around the state, and engaging foundations, corporations and private donors of all sizes and locations. To attract and retain partnerships the new ED will work to expand the visibility and awareness of the organization to grow its funding support throughout the state and beyond. Camas Path, Kalispel Language and Culture Alliance, Camas Early Childhood Learning Center, K-12 Education, and the Kalispel Tribe of Indians has several well-established programs and successful annual conferences. The new ED will partner with Program Directors and the Tribal Administrator to review this programming to help identify possible opportunities for funding support.

STRATEGIC PLANNING/ORGANIZATION DESIGN:

In collaboration with the board, the new ED will update the existing strategic plan to reflect information and input gathered from partners and constituents and then effectively implement the plan. Given the changing landscape around the state, the new ED will lead an effort to reimagine, re-organize, and fully staff the Camas Foundation to fulfill its mission.

FUNDRAISING/REVENUE:

As a public charity, support from universal funding sources is imperative to the Camas Foundation’s work. The new ED will work with the board and staff to identify sources of revenue, in support of capacity building for programming and develop strategies to seek support from these sources. 

ADVOCACY:

One of the primary objectives of the Camas Foundation is advocacy work with private foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government for fund development. The new ED will establish deep relationships with these funding partners to become a go-to resource in philanthropic, and government understanding in support of Native American issues impacting Tribes.

Leadership Skills:

Candidates will be evaluated on their professional background, volunteer experience, and direct and transferable skills. We welcome candidates with a range of life and business management experience, personal identities, and backgrounds. The Camas Foundation is seeking candidates with a compelling combination of demonstrated experience and skills in some or all the following areas:

•Experience serving as an Executive Director, Deputy Director, CEO, COO, CAO, or similar role(s) or senior staff member of an organization, division, or department of comparable size.

•Broad understanding of nonprofit operations (e.g., Budgeting, Financial Management, Human Resources, Advocacy, Strategic Planning, Fund Development).

•Exposure to nonprofit operations, business operations, or public sector operations – which may come from board, volunteer, or professional experience – is required for success in this role.

•Demonstrated experience building strong, collaborative relationships and successful partnerships with people and organizations from diverse backgrounds, points of view, and sectors.

•Proficiency in Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and experience with CRM databases, email engagement platforms, event management systems, and project management software.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisor responsibilities.

Qualifications

•Bachelor’s Degree with at least two years of relevant experience. 

•Proven experience in database entry, analysis, reporting and some project management. 

•Proficiency in Microsoft Office. 

•Preferred proficiency in donor software databases. 

•Successful completion of background investigation by the Kalispel Tribal Gaming Agency. 

Certificates, Licenses, Regulations

•Obtain and maintain a Level 4 Work Permit.
