JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Dean of Students
Contract: 234 Days
Building/Facility: Johnstown High School
Reports to: High School Principal
Employment status: Regular/Full-time
FLSA Status: Exempt

Description: The Johnstown-Monroe School District is looking for a Dean of Students to perform those tasks assigned by the building principal and assist the building principal in the development and continuous implementation of a high school program which promotes the educational well-being of each student in the school.
Essential Functions:

  • Assists in the establishment of goals and objectives for the school.
  • Represent the building administrative team on school district committees as assigned.
  • Assists in the process of interviewing, evaluating, and selecting new staff members.
  • Assists in evaluation of school staff.
  • Administer the school in the absence of the principal.
  • Coordinates the revision of the teacher handbook as assigned.
  • Shall assist in the direction, supervision, and evaluation of the building instructional program.
  • Assists in the maintenance and improvement of the quality of the instructional program by being responsible for teacher implementation of the curriculum.
  • Assists in the planning and implementing of programs for the health, safety and welfare of the students in the building
  • Attend and supervise, as required, special events, functions, and athletic events of the school.
  • Monitor lunchroom operation, student assemblies and student arrival and departure.
  • Enforces and establishes disciplinary procedures which allows due process to the rights of students; familiarizes students, staff, and parents with the disciplinary procedures; hears and acts on behavior problems referred to the principal’s office schedules and supervises the personnel responsible for the detention and Wednesday school; compiles the annual discipline report; revises annually the student handbook assigned by the building principal.
  • Establish attendance procedures which allows due process to the rights of students; familiarizes students, staff, and parents with the attendance procedures; hears and acts on attendance problems referred by attendance personnel as assigned by the building principal.
  • Establishes and maintains procedures for the transition of students entering and leaving the school; establishes and maintains the school health program including up-to-date health records; plans and supervises all emergency preparedness programs including fire, tornado, and school safety drills as assigned by the building principal.
  • Assists as assigned on bullying, harassment, discrimination, and Title IX investigations.
  • Collaborate with staff to bring relevant and appropriate programing to students and staff (assemblies, virtual assemblies, etc.)
  • Promote good public relations by maintaining professional personal appearance, attitude and conversation.
  • Respond to complaints of parents in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., evaluations, health problems, documentation for legal proceedings.
  • Have a presence in hallways and other common spaces periodically throughout the day.
  • Assist with IAT. IEP, ETR, and 504 meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or superintendent.

Qualifications:

  • Appropriate State of Ohio Teacher certification/license.
  • Appropriate State of Ohio administrator’s
  • Master’s Degree in Administration from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years successful education related experience.
  • Such alternative(s) to the above qualifications as the superintendent and/or the board of education may find appropriate.
  • Position requires a working knowledge of high school functions including student discipline, teacher evaluation, OHSAA rules and regulations; good organizational and communication skills; and ability to work cooperatively with others.

  • Occasional repetitive hand motion, e.g., computer keyboard, typing, calculator, writing
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 60 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment
  • Frequent requirement to travel, both daily and overnight
  • Frequent weekend/evening/summer work
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to attend to classes on all scheduled school days, except calamity days
