Johns Hopkins Medicine is Hiring a Special Response Unit Captain Near Baltimore, MD

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Johns Hopkins Public Safety is seeking a Special Response Unit Captain. This position is responsible for the supervision and operation of the Special Response Unit within the Public Safety Department. The Special Response Unit (SRU) is comprised of Special Police Officers (SPO) patrol officers and SPO Canine handlers (detection canines); they are primarily assigned on the JHU/JHMI campus. The SRU Captain oversees and gives direction, training and guidance to officers who patrol internally and externally via foot or mobile unit. Additionally responsible for the overall care & maintenance schedules of the canine vehicle as well as overall inventory control of all security devices (e.g. radios, batteries, batons, other gear, etc.) in the unit.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Requires three (3) years of security supervisory experience at the Lieutenant rank in the Protective Services program at the Johns Hopkins Health System or Johns Hopkins University or be a law enforcement officer who has graduated from an accredited law enforcement training academy or equivalent Military Police experience, and has at least three (3) years of police supervisory experience. Requires knowledge of the basic principles of supervision and canine management.
  • Must possess knowledge of canine management and development of training needs. Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills necessary to establish and maintain effective rapport with staff and public, and management and organization skills to maximize manpower and equipment resources within existing budget constraints, prepare and analyze trend reports, and develop shift goals and objectives. Must also possess basic computer skills to utilize scheduling and payroll software program.
  • Must be able to obtain and retain a clearance identification card based on background investigation by Maryland State Police. Must successfully graduate from a Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission certified Special Police Officer (SPO) academy.
