Recreation Specialist – Assistant Swim Team Coach

Pay Range: $20/hour

Reports to: Head Swim Team Coach

Position Summary:

The Assistant Swim Team Coach is responsible for assisting and implementing recreation activities and providing supervision for participants within the guidelines of DPRD. The Assistant Swim Team Coach is an integral team member overseeing administrative tasks and programs and assists other Parks and Recreation staff. Work involves extensive public contact working knowledge of department procedures and overall City Operations.

The list of duties, as outlined herein, represents the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.

  • Demonstrates accountability for the delivering of quality services and work products as a part of the overall department and Citywide strategic direction, goals, and objectives.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to provide and require quality programming and meet department goals and objectives through cooperative and collaborative team and individual efforts.
  • Takes the initiative to accomplish tasks and identifies opportunities for improvement.
  • Follows all established safety rules, departmental policies, and procedures and carries out oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
  • Provides responsive and timely feedback on the status and progress of work assignments to supervisors and coworkers.
  • Reports issues regarding conditions of the aquatic facility to the Head Swim Team Coach.

Teamwork/Interpersonal: the process of working collaboratively with a group of people in order to achieve a goal

· Functions as a cooperative, productive, and willing team member when working with other employees on projects, events, and programs.

· Proactively applies individual strengths to support team and individual efforts toward accomplishing organizational goals and work-related tasks.

· Develops and maintains positive, professional, collaborative working relationships with partners, other city divisions, and departments.

· Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and human relations skills to build effective working and team relationships and relationships with Decatur families.

· Attends training and monthly staff meetings.

· Serves as a role model to participants and staff by demonstrating a positive attitude and appropriate behaviors.

Task: a piece of work to be done or undertaken

· Recruits community members to participate in new and ongoing programs.

· Responds to all inquiries and complaints or refer to the appropriate person

· Effectively manages self through the independent initiation and accomplishment of tasks.

· Provides supervision for facility and appearance, including light janitorial duties such as sweeping and cleaning restrooms and other areas.

· Enforces program rules and supervises program areas.

· Assists the Swim Team Coach with implementing practice plans for the instructional league, beginner, intermediate, and advanced swim team members.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES AND REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent the required knowledge, skill, and / or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the required duties.

· Previous experience developing and managing a swim team, recreation, or aquatic program.

· Ability to complete multiple assignments under deadline conditions in a dynamic office environment. Ability to handle citizens, personnel, and the public professionally and politely. Ability to attend additional training as assigned.

· Must be at least 16 years of age.

· Must obtain a valid State of Georgia driver's license (Non-commercial Class A or B) with a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR).

· Must be able to pass a criminal background check, work reference check, pre-employment post-offer physical and drug screen.

Education and/or Experience:

· Previous experience dealing with the public is preferred, such as developing and implementing aquatic programming and/or coaching a swim team.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

· American Red Cross WSI (Water Safety Instructor), CPR, and First Aid is preferred.

Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

· Must be able to sit, walk, and stand for long periods.

· Can lift and carry heavy objects (10-50 lbs.) sit, bend, squat, and twist daily; must be able to physically operate city vehicle.

· Can sit for long periods using office equipment and computers.

· Can walk and stand in the outdoors (playgrounds and parks) setting, including the pool, while in extreme heat and cold for up to 8 hours daily.

· Must deal with constant interruptions and noise and meet with others on a regularly.

· The employee may be exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, climb, and perform repetitive motions on a daily.

· Must be available to work weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays.
