Job Summary:
The RN Charge Nurse plays a pivotal role in coordinating and overseeing nursing care on a designated unit or shift. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Charge Nurse is responsible for supervising nursing staff, managing resources, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care. This leadership position requires strong clinical expertise, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Supervision:
  • Provide leadership and direction to nursing staff, including Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Nursing Assistants (NAs), on the unit or shift.
  • Assign and delegate nursing tasks and responsibilities based on patient acuity, staff competency, and workload distribution.
  • Supervise and mentor nursing staff, providing guidance, support, and education to promote professional development and clinical competence.
  • Patient Care Coordination:
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients, ensuring adherence to established standards of practice and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, including physicians, therapists, social workers, and pharmacists, to develop and implement comprehensive care plans.
  • Monitor patient progress, assess for changes in condition, and intervene promptly to address emergent or deteriorating situations.
  • Resource Management:
  • Manage unit resources efficiently, including staffing levels, equipment, supplies, and medications, to meet patient care needs and organizational goals.
  • Coordinate with Nurse Managers or Nurse Administrators to ensure adequate staffing coverage and skill mix to maintain safe and effective patient care delivery.
  • Participate in budget planning, cost containment initiatives, and inventory management processes as needed.
  • Quality Improvement:
  • Participate in quality improvement activities, including performance monitoring, data collection, and analysis of clinical outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Serve as a liaison between nursing staff, healthcare providers, patients, and families to facilitate effective communication and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Communicate pertinent information, including patient status updates, care plans, and safety concerns, during shift handoffs and interdisciplinary rounds.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, respect, and open communication among nursing staff and healthcare team members.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical nursing experience, with demonstrated proficiency in a relevant specialty area or clinical setting.
  • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and management abilities, with the capacity to inspire and motivate nursing staff to achieve excellence in patient care.
  • Clinical Competence: Proficient clinical skills and knowledge across a variety of patient populations and healthcare settings.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders.
  • Critical Thinking: Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess complex patient situations and make sound clinical judgments.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve common goals and deliver optimal patient care.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to adapt to changing patient needs, unit dynamics, and organizational priorities.
  • Ethical Conduct: Commitment to ethical and professional conduct in all aspects of nursing practice, including confidentiality, integrity, and patient advocacy.
