The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Through our exhibitions, education, public programs, and community outreach, we offer an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since our founding in 1974, we have presented more than 700 exhibitions and offered thousands of classes, providing instruction at every level. Our new integrated center on the Lower East Side reunites our school and museum in one space to become the cultural anchor of Essex Crossing.

Position Summary:

The Director of Foundation and Government Support is primarily responsible for setting strategies and achieving annual goals for support from foundation and government sources, ensuring funding for special program areas such as exhibitions, public programs, collections projects, scholarships, community programs, and education, as well as other institutional initiatives like Strategic Planning or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. Reporting to the Senior Director of Development and working closely with the Senior Staff, Executive Director, Board members, staff throughout the organization, and the Development team, the Director will help forward a culture of philanthropy and manage opportunities for support in a rapidly changing environment. 

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive strategy and implementation plan for current, lapsed, and new institutional funders (foundations, governmental agencies) to meet and exceed fundraising goals. 
  • Maintain relationships with institutional funders by producing grant applications, programmatic and financial reports, presentations, invitations, and other correspondence associated with cultivation and solicitation, as well as by leading the planning and execution of site visits, meetings, and events. 
  • Develop and execute plan for expanding and diversifying ICP’s overall base of institutional funders, with a focus on expanding major foundation support, through ongoing prospecting, direct outreach, and activation of the Executive Director, Senior Director of Development, Board members, other senior staff. 
  • Serve as a front-line fundraiser and attend events and donor meetings representing ICP. 
  • Create and implement fundraising strategies specific to the ICP School, Exhibitions, and?Community and Public Programs. Suggest and implement creative, entrepreneurial strategies for activating new foundation sponsors and partnerships that maximize support. 
  • Develop and manage institutional pipeline of prospects for a future endowment campaign. Develop presentation materials and arrange meetings between Executive Director and institutional leaders. 
  • Promote and supervise recognition and active stewardship of institutional funders and supporters and ongoing, active cultivation and engagement of public officials; coordinate the participation of the Executive Director, Senior Director of Development, Board members and staff in stewardship activities to ensure continued engagement of funders and renewed support.
  • Prepare briefing materials for senior leadership for the cultivation and solicitation of funding sources. 
  • Build supportive, collaborative relationships with ICP program staff to ensure accountability for grant-supported projects. Work collaboratively with Marketing staff to create communications that support fundraising efforts. 
  • In collaboration with Finance and programming staff, develop budget documents and solicitation materials, help package grant agreements and contracts, oversee program and finance reporting to funders, and spearhead the submission of regular invoices within the prescribed time frame for each contract. 
  • Use data and insights from Raiser’s Edge donor management systems to drive reporting and decision-making across the portfolio and maintain accurate and up-to-date records of progress with funders. 
  • Collaborate with other Development team members, such as Individual Giving, Corporate Giving, and Operations, to create and implement a unified solicitation strategy.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and deliver high-quality correspondence, proposals, budgets, presentations, and reports in conjunction with cultivation and stewardship efforts.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Development to develop the annual department budget, and set ambitious, sustainable annual goals for institutional support. Implement metrics to track fundraising activities and actively engage in the forecasting, budgeting, and reforecasting processes. 
  • Monitor progress toward the ICP strategic plan regarding individual giving.
  • Ensure accountability and effective stewardship in the execution of funded programs, exhibitions, and initiatives.
  • Keep abreast of latest trends and developments in institutional support and the art world, including seeking professional development opportunities (webinars, classes, conferences, etc.); actively building network of individual and institutional contacts.
  • Additional responsibilities, as necessary.

Education Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. 

Experience Qualifications: 

  • At least seven years’ experience in fundraising or equivalent experience in a cultural or other non- profit institution; knowledge of the visual arts world preferred.
  • Experience in grants writing, reporting, using Raiser’s Edge or similar database, developing and managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop productive relationships with internal and external constituents such as donors, prospects, senior leadership, and board members.
  • Demonstrated success as a front-line institutional giving officer, managing a portfolio of current and prospective foundations.

  • Superlative written and verbal communication skills (including editing) as well as interpersonal skills. 
  • High level of effectiveness in following up, meeting deadlines and managing multiple tasks involving colleagues and others.
  • Strong understanding of government and foundation grantmaking processes 
  • Ability to interpret and develop effective budgets and other financial documents and a strong understanding of how they relate to programs, proposals, and grants.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to work effectively across the organization diverse levels of the organization. 
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and as a team player.
  • A high level of energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and sound judgment; excellent attention to detail.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and excellence. 
  • Genuine passion for the institution’s mission and knowledge of the visual arts and cultural communities.
