About the Role
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) is looking for a Senior Construction Inspector to join our New York Team! We are a leading engineering firm known for quality and responsiveness and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil engineering firm. The Senior Inspector works closely with the Resident Engineer to ensure conformance with standards, safety, and contract requirements.
This role is responsible for overseeing contractor’s daily activities and work of ‘junior’ inspectors. Join us on this exciting journey as we continue to build a company based on Integrity, Excellence, and Ingenuity!
Essential Duties/Functions and Responsibilities
  • Distinguished from the Construction Inspector by the performance of the full range of duties assigned, including skilled construction inspection, authority and uses required higher levels of technical education and training.
  • Expected to work independently exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Reviews and comments on standards, plans, specifications, special provisions, manufacturers’ material specification, applicable regulations, and technical and constructability issues.
  • Assumes responsibility of administering portions of the contract, which include preparing change orders and pay requests.
  • Observes work in all stages of progress to ensure conformance with standards, safety and other applicable regulations and contract requirements; assess construction methods against industry standards; reviews workmanship and sequence of operations; monitors project schedules.
  • Responsible for overseeing daily activities of the inspection personnel and seeing to it that they complete detailed and thorough daily activity reports; accepting or rejecting the contractor’s work.
  • Duties include more direct client contact, arranging job progress meetings, material testing, conducting complex construction inspections, notifying Resident Engineer or Construction Manager of problems and deviations from plans and specifications, and offering solutions for unexpected problems or accidents.
  • Inspecting and approving maintenance of traffic including lane closures.
  • Inspecting deep excavation and underground structures.
  • Ensures construction materials are acquired from approved sources.
  • Coordinates, inspects, reviews, and affirms results of tests on construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and soils.
  • Maintains an awareness of safety and health requirements and assures compliance of applicable regulations and contract provisions for the protection of the public and construction project personnel.
  • Ensures that contractor applies the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to environmental and Waste Management requirements.
  • Keeps the Resident Engineer informed of conditions which could result in contract change orders and/or delays and assist in proactively resolving these situations.
  • Supervises/performs quality assurance inspections to achieve compliance with contract plan and specifications on all phases of treatment facility, highway and bridge construction. 
To Be Successful
  • Knowledge in industry Standards and Specifications for different agencies (the NYCDEP, NYCDOT, NYCDDC etc.).
  • Extensive knowledge of standards, specifications, physical characteristics and properties of roadway, structures, drainage and utility systems construction materials, and the approved methods and equipment used in making physical tests of construction materials.
  • Skilled in detecting discrepancies in plans, materials, and construction methods and processes, and in implementing appropriate corrective action.
  • Skilled in planning and scheduling inspection activities.
  • Ability to effectively make decisions concerning work in progress, solving field and office problems, and supervise others.
  • Uses initiative and exercise independent judgment; draws valid conclusions and project consequences of decisions and recommendations; meets deadlines.
  • Ability to read, to analyze, and to interpret complex technical documents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering / Construction Management or equivalent; or NICET III/NICET IV Certification
  • Minimum 6 years of experience with deep excavation, support of excavation, utilities, roadway, waste treatment facilities, highway and/or bridge construction experience.

Physical Demands

Working Conditions
  • Usually works in outside weather conditions.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or in-progress construction hazards: fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration. Often works around dust, asphalt, and concrete.
  • Must be physically capable of walking and moving about on the construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds. 
  • Spends some time working indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
  • Usually works a standard 40-hour workweek either daytime or nighttime.
  • Sometimes needs to put in extra hours, including weekends, to keep up with intense construction work at times and deal with unexpected situations and accidents.
  • IEI will provide a company vehicle for fieldwork with acceptable driver's record.
