SUMMARY OF OPPORTUNITY:

An IPS Police Officer assists school administrators in creating and maintaining a safe and secure

school climate and learning environment for students, staff and visitors; provides a full range of

law enforcement/SRO services to the district—including crime prevention, alternatives to arrest,

physical security, criminal investigation, as well as emergency plans and operations. The person in

this role exercises jurisdiction routinely over school age children in Marion County, regardless of

specific location. The officer is expected to create relationships with stakeholders (school

administrators, parents, students, and the greater community), formulate crime prevention tactics,

and make himself or herself available for meetings regarding law enforcement related topics.


WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The following outlines what your core duties and responsibilities will be for this position and

provides a sample overview of what your day-to-day may look like.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains rapport with students. Serve as a positive role model for

students.

  • Regularly exercises alternatives to arrest in a continuous effort to lower the arrest of

juveniles.

  • Investigates crimes or assists in criminal investigations as appropriate.
  • Effects apprehensions and makes arrests as appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality of information, reports and records.
  • Other duties as assigned


“Day In the Life” Overview

On a regular day, as a Police Officer, you might:

  • Facilitate Conferences
  • Accommodate students and staff on field trips
  • Patrol school buildings and grounds
  • Perform bus duties and or metal detections
  • Attend required training sessions

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or GED certification
  • Previous law enforcement experience and working with youth experience is helpful, but

not required.

Must meet minimum Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board physical fitness requirements upon

arrival at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy for the Basic Law Enforcement Course. Must

meet minimum Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board physical fitness requirements for veteran

officers when such are adopted.
