Department Information
The Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (HHSP) within the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
The Hudson & Holland Scholars Program is a scholarship and academic support program for high-achieving underrepresented minorities. HHSP is the largest merit-based scholarship program at Indiana University with over 2,400 students currently enrolled.
The program provides a scholarship as well as a variety of support services to address the holistic needs of student participants in the program. Hudson & Holland Scholars are some of the most scholastically successful students at IU, and their presence and contributions deeply enrich the campus learning environment.

Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Provides culturally competent academic counseling for Hudson & Holland scholars who have yet to be accepted into an academic program pursuing or considering majors, minors, or certificates.
  • Interfaces directly with students by providing active, present, hospitable and enthusiastic support.
  • Guides scholars in planning their course of study in concert with the university's curricular requirements; explains curriculum requirements and school and campus policies.
  • Meets with scholars 1-on-1 to guide students in academic programs that will meet their educational needs and the requirements of their chosen major, minor, and/or certificate.
  • Assists scholars in making informed decisions about a choice of major and potential career or graduate school direction; helps students to assess their interests, values, and academic skills and to understand these in relation to major choice and potential future career/graduate school options.
  • Teaches students how to navigate university systems, academic processes, and policies; empowers student accountability in academic decisions about courses, career direction, and long-term plans; and provides guidance on avenues for increased involvement as Hudson & Holland scholar and in the IU Bloomington community.
  • Refers students to appropriate program and campus resources, such as academic support resources, placement programs, internship and overseas study opportunities, etc.
  • Tracks and monitors students' academic progress, reviews and maintains confidential student records to ensure that students meet requirements and to document advising discussions and communicates this information in a timely manner to students and to appropriate academic offices when necessary.
  • Assists in planning academic programs; recommends strategies, courses, and priorities; and provides encouragement to students and suggests alternative study procedures.
  • Collaborates with staff in HHSP as well as academic and campus partners on shared student academic outcomes.
  • Assists with HHSP functions including IFS, orientation, graduation, and academic programming and events.
General Responsibilities
  • In consultation with leadership, develops, designs, and maintains diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion program objectives to support organizational goals.
  • Develops communications and serves as liaison to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, and leadership members.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on diversity-related topics, such as cultural understanding, implicit bias, recruitment and retention strategies, inclusive terminology, and team dynamics, to a variety of audiences.
  • Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers.
  • Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
  • May serve on various committees and provide input on strategic direction for the department or unit.
  • Arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities as necessary.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years in diversity, equity, and inclusion programming or related field
Preferred
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • 2 years in a university setting, academic or student advising experience is strongly preferred

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires occasional evening and weekend work.
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
