Department InformationAs part of the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (OVPDEI), the Groups Scholars Program provides academic, financial, and social support to selected underrepresented Indiana college students from matriculation to graduation and beyond.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Provides advising, registration advice and individualized assistance to assigned students from point of admission through graduation.
- Implements specific advising programs that ensure academic progress.
- Communicates available seminars, workshops, and other support programming to students for their development.
- Coordinates evaluative services with English Language Instructional Program (ELIP).
- Coordinates accommodations with Accessible Educational Services regarding students with qualifying medical conditions, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Applies extensive knowledge of learning differences and strategies to provide individualized academic support to students who are falling behind in class and support for students needs in reading and writing.
- Maintains contact with all advisees during each semester through in-person meetings, group meetings, phone calls, and email.
- Maintains clear and concise advising notes reflecting all advising meetings.
- Responds constructively and timely to a wide range of student inquiries and concerns related to academic needs, and also to personal or private issues, health concerns, family matters, personal relationships, financial concerns, and other matters.
General Responsibilities
- In consultation with leadership, develops, designs, and maintains diversity, equity, belonging, and inclusion program objectives to support organizational goals.
- Develops communications and serves as liaison to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging program participants, collaborators in other units, community partners, and leadership members.
- Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on diversity-related topics, such as cultural understanding, implicit bias, recruitment and retention strategies, inclusive terminology, and team dynamics, to a variety of audiences.
- Recruits, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates faculty and staff partners, students and volunteers.
- Mentors, serves as a resource and provides guidance to team staff members as needed.
- May serve on various committees and provide input on strategic direction for the department or unit.
- Arranges staff travel, accommodations, and research activities as necessary.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 2 years in diversity, equity, and inclusion programming or related field
Preferred
- 2 years of experience in student advising, counseling, or educational programming
- Experience in higher education setting
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Preferred
- Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University

Working Conditions / DemandsThe person in this role must be available for evening and weekend events. Travel within and across university campuses, as well as within Indiana is required.
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
