The Laboratory Assistant isresponsible for collection of specimens for lab testing on inpatients,outpatients, emergency room and clinic patients. This position is responsible forapplication of learned techniques necessary to obtain quality specimens to aidthe techs in reliable results. The Laboratory Assistant will be responsible for developing computer skills for the LaboratoryInformation System and complying with all regulatory requirements, includingLab Compliance. This position requires adept social skills and teamwork. The Lab Assistant isresponsible for assisting the tech with certain preliminary routines includinginstrument maintenance, some QC, instrument startup routines, daily routines(temp checks, work area disinfection, etc.). The Lab Assistants may be trained to do non-waived and limited waived testing. Employee is responsible for continuingeducation requirements and license renewal.

EDUCATION

• High school diploma
• Current certification for DOT Drug Screen Collections may be required.
• Current certification for EBT may be required.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

• LA license as Laboratory Assistant
• Experience may be required, depending onassignment

JOB KNOWLEDGE

• Must possess phlebotomy training
• May be required to have experiencecollecting drug screens with COC
• May be required to have experience withBAT

PRINCIPLE TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ordering lab tests in LIS
• Performing venipuncture on patients
• Receiving and accessioning specimensinto lab
• Appropriate documentation where required
• Reviewing OP charts
• Verifying medical necessity, callingphysicians offices, getting ABN’s signed
• Performing drug screens with COC
• Possibly performing Breath AlcoholTesting
• Packaging lab tests for Reference Lab
• Packaging drug screens for Reference Lab
• Running (but not reviewing) some QC
• Running waived tests (macroscopic UA,pregnancy, stool OB, etc.)
• Setting up cultures
• Daily Instrument maintenance andcleaning
• Changing instrument reagents
• Temperature monitoring
• Miscellaneous equipment maintenance anddisinfection
• Documenting corrective actions

WORK HOURS:

Employee will be provided a routine 8 or 12 hour schedule, plus at least1 weekend a month and equal share of holidays, with occasional rotation toother shifts to meet staffing needs. Shift hours may occasionally be cut or overtime required in accordancewith patient volume and staffing. Theemployee may be assigned to work specific areas, or may rotate as needed. The employee may be specifically assigned towork at the North Campus, Main Campus, or to switch to meet the needs of thelab.
