IAPP is Hiring an AI Governance Research Fellow Near Portsmouth, NH

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is looking for an AI Governance Research Fellow to join the team for a one-year fellowship.

Job Summary

The AI Governance Research Fellow will play a leading role in supporting AI governance professionals as they respond to the rapid adoption of AI technologies, laws, and policies. This role presents a unique opportunity to spend a year researching AI governance while creating ties to the community in industry, government, and civil society around the world.

Applicants from all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Previous research, coursework or experience in law, policy, technology, data science, or sociology may be useful.

About the IAPP AI Governance Center

The AI Governance Center was created in May 2023 to provide AI governance professionals with the content, resources, networking, training and certification needed to respond to the complex risks in the AI field. The Center’s fellowship program was launched to encourage and enable research and scholarship in the increasingly important and fast-paced field of AI governance.

Job Responsibilities

  • During the fellowship, most of the Fellow’s time will be devoted to contributing substantively to the production of AI governance research in collaboration with the full Research & Insights team, with strategic guidance and direction from the Managing Director of the AI Governance Center.
  • The fellow will also present research, during in-person conferences or virtually, and represent the work of the AI Governance Center in speaking engagements.
  • The fellow will contribute to the development and maintenance of resources in the AI Governance Center and incorporate members of staff and the wider AI governance community into research projects as appropriate.
  • The fellow may be asked to support the wider strategic objectives of the AI Governance Center, including by working closely with the Managing Director of the AI Governance Center across IAPP event programing, training and certification, and membership.
  • All work product is expected to be of very high quality, appropriate for publication through professional, academic, and industry channels, as well as useful to practicing professionals.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience

  • A strong academic record and completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year program are minimum requirements; a graduate degree is preferred.
  • The successful AI Governance Research Fellow will be encouraged to work at the IAPP headquarters in Portsmouth, NH, though a remote fellowship may be possible.
  • Successful applicants will have a strong academic, practical, or practitioner background in a relevant field(s), proven communication skills and interest in pursuing a long-term career path in the field of AI governance.

Work Environment

At the IAPP, we value in-person connections fueled by fun, excellence, and communication. To align with this value, we have a hybrid work environment that allows for two remote days and three days in our Portsmouth, NHoffice. A remote fellowship may be possible.
