Position Description:
HRS is seeking a full-time Strength and Conditioning Specialist (SCS) to support the Battlefield Airmen (BA)/Tactical Air Control Party (TACP)/Washington Air National Guard (WA ANG) members as part of the Human Performance Optimization (HPO) Program. The position will serve as an onsite certified strength and conditioning specialist to develop programming that includes a combination of strength training, speed and agility training, power training, skill-related drills, flexibility training, and balance training.

The HPO program focuses on the whole servicemember. It assists the WA ANG in accomplishing military missions in the short term while emphasizing the maintenance of peak performance over the long term. It also facilitates lengthening the service life of the “human weapon system” while ensuring high-quality performance production. The HPO program’s long-term perspective includes rehabilitative services to provide rapid recovery from injuries and performance services that provide focused physical and mental conditioning via specialized care for rapid recovery to return fully-mission-capable.

This position is contingent upon contract award. The estimated start date is September 2023

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Provide coverage during operating hours at Camp Murray, Washington, for 40 hours a week. Due to working with traditional National Guardsman, work schedules will need to be adjusted to allow for working during drill weekends
  • Develop strength and conditioning programs that include a combination of strength training, speed and agility training, power training, skill-related drills, flexibility training, and balance training to prevent injuries and increase performance of servicemembers
  • Support the Injury Manager (IM) in providing musculoskeletal injury care and designing/implementing a strength and conditioning program to assist in the rehabilitation and return to participation for injured servicemembers
  • Rapidly support the development of generalized “Fly Away” training plans to preserve servicemember performance while deployed away from garrison station. These plans must consist of strength training and/or rehabilitation programs that can be done outside the facility and can be generic or specific depending on the need
  • Assist the IM in tracking assessments, injuries, and performance of service members and provide data and human performance program metrics as requested by the customer within one business day of request
  • Maintain current, secured files on all personnel seeking treatment and increase their performance to track progress and improve rehabilitation strategies. Assist the IM in combining Physical Therapy (PT) programs with SCS to develop the most appropriate rehabilitation and functional fitness individual plans
  • Participate in weekly and monthly meetings to review the care provided and provide copies of all required documentation to the unit medical staff and leadership
  • Provide monthly and quarterly reporting on utilization of HPO services, opportunities for training/education, capability gaps, and status reports on injured/degraded members to ensure rapid and effective recovery and identify identifying best practices/emerging science opportunities for improvement in prevention and care strategies
  • Assist in developing unit-specific HPO strategic plan and long-term objectives based on unit-specific mission requirements. The plan will encompass each area of treatment and address specific approaches and processes to meeting requirements
  • Attend weekly meetings to coordinate care and document servicemember’s injuries, care, and rehabilitation strategies
  • Ensure safe and effective operation of equipment used for patient care and contribute to a safe working environment
  • Maintain a clean and safe HPO area, including cleaning all equipment and facilities daily and as needed after use
Experience/Education Requirements:
  • U.S. citizenship
  • Current security clearance or eligibility to obtain access credentials for NACI/Tier 1 CAC (at a minimum)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in exercise science, health science, or physical education-related discipline from an accredited college or university (Master’s highly preferred)
  • 5 years of experience (continuous preferred) working with athletes within a military Special Operations Forces (SOF) community, First Responders, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), or professional sports in Strength and Conditioning or Athletic Training including:
    • 6 months experience and demonstrated history of performing manual therapy, trigger point dry needling, Graston Technique soft tissue mobilization, and functional taping is preferred with the appropriate/necessary certifications
  • Active credential as either a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or as a Sports Performance Coach through the United States of America Weightlifting Association (USAWA)
  • Current certification in basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to include Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training
  • Credentials in one or more of the following areas:
    • Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)
    • Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT)
    • USA Weightlifting Level 1 Certification
    • Certifications pertaining to providers of manual therapy or soft tissue injuries
  • Ability to assist with strength and conditioning testing and training protocols
  • Must be able to meet the demands of training with the SOF, including the ability to hike over rough terrain and function in harsh environments to observe SOF training evolutions
  • Must be able to lift and manipulate loads or weights up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to succeed in a dynamic environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Availability to support adjusted work schedule during drill weekends
  • Availability to support on-site work
  • Availability to support business travel including attending yearly Weapon System Summit to engage with the TACP weapon system
