Howard University Hospital is Hiring a Clinical Informatics Specialist Near Washington, DC

This full-time position hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm. 
 
The Clinical Informatics Specialist :

  • Leads the evaluation, selection, development, implementation, configuration, testing, training, and management of the full lifecycle of clinical systems. Under limited supervision, this individual works with staff, healthcare providers, and vendors to optimize the usage and operations of clinical systems through requirements gathering, testing, education, training, quality outcomes, and providing support in accordance with organizational goals. Participates and leads projects related to clinical systems.
  • Interacts internally with clinical, technical, and administrative staff, physicians and Hospital and University officials. Interacts externally with partners, community services leaders, vendors, regulators, professional associations, and other clinical IT professionals.
  • Manages workflow and business process changes to ensure the success and optimization of new or modified clinical information systems.
  • Ensures that new or modified clinical information systems maintain patient confidentiality and privacy, in accordance with legal (e.g., HIPAA and HITECH) and industry (e.g., The Joint Commission) standards.
  • Assures that clinical systems comply with governmental programs (e.g., Promoting Interoperability).
  • Monitors clinical systems’ use and assures they are operated safely and securely and all stakeholders abide by cybersecurity policies and procedures.
  • Identifies and gathers functional and non-functional requirements for system developments and usage.
  • Coordinates and supports the testing of new and upgraded clinical applications.
  • Monitors and evaluates system setup and usage to identify and prevent risks to users and patients.
  • Provides ongoing change recommendations for optimal system usage.
  • Coordinates the collection and analysis of metrics that relate to benefits realization and the return on investment in clinical information systems.

Qualified candidates will possess:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in Nursing, Information Technology, Informatics, or other related field.
  • Current Nursing License in the District of Columbia required for nursing candidates 
  • 5 to 8 years of direct work experience in an acute care hospital and/or ambulatory setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of clinical systems practices and principles, which is gained through direct experience or graduating from an accredited school, university or college. 
  • Experience with Cerner products and systems is a plus.
  • One year of experience in a health care organization of similar size and complexity.
  • Healthcare Informatics certification is desired.
  • Strong knowledge of systems analysis, workflow planning, gathering business requirements and transforming them into functional specifications.
  • Understanding of clinical workflows, processes, and terminology in a number of clinical service lines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and harmonious work relationships with staff, physicians, Hospital and University officials, and the general public.
  • Awareness of current IT security standards, applicable privacy laws, Joint Commission accreditation standards, and other Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Strong analytical ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; and presentation skills
  • Ability to collaborate with management, medical staff and employees at all levels within the organization, using a customer-focused approach to gain information to improve the services offered by the Information Systems department.
  • Competent in desktop applications, project management, and communication.
