Hopewell City Public Schools is Hiring an Environmental Science Teacher- High School (2024-25 SY) Near Hopewell, VA

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Earth Science, or a related field. Additionally, they must hold or be eligible to possess, a state teaching certification in Biology, Earth Science, or a relevant subject area. Demonstrated proficiency in environmental science concepts, principles, and laboratory techniques is preferred. Candidates should also be knowledgeable about curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment strategies. Furthermore, they should demonstrate knowledge of current environmental issues, sustainability practices, and conservation efforts. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective teaching and collaboration. The candidate should have the ability to engage students in hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences. Moreover, they must exhibit a commitment to fostering environmental literacy and stewardship among students.

DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Science Teacher is responsible for delivering comprehensive environmental science instruction to high school students, fostering an understanding of ecological systems, environmental sustainability, human impacts on the environment, and other standards-based concepts and topics.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Develop and implement environmental science curriculum aligned with state standards and educational objectives.
  • Teach students about ecological principles, environmental issues, and scientific methods through interactive lessons, laboratory experiments, and field studies.
  • Facilitate discussions on topics such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and resource management.
  • Engage students in hands-on learning experiences, outdoor activities, and citizen science projects to promote environmental awareness and stewardship.
  • Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including exams, projects, presentations, and research papers.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in conducting scientific investigations, analyzing data, and drawing conclusions.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, environmental organizations, and community partners to enhance environmental education initiatives.
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress, upcoming environmental science events, and opportunities for involvement.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with environmental science research, teaching methods, and curriculum resources.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the direction of the School Principal

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties performed are typically in the school setting. The teacher may be required to conduct field studies in natural environments, such as parks, forests, or aquatic habitats. Professional work is performed by providing support and consultative services for the assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.

  • The salary noted is based on the 2023-24 school year. Salaries will be updated following the 2024-25 budget confirmation.
