Hopewell City Public Schools is Hiring an English Learner (ESOL) Teacher (2024-25 SY) Near Hopewell, VA

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in ESL. Fluent in Spanish in reading, writing and speaking is preferred but not required. Considerable knowledge of the regulations and policies related to English Learner Programs and of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of EL instruction. Working knowledge of current curriculum development, program implementation, learning theory and recent research in EL instruction. Working skill in the use of technology to deliver and assess instruction. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students' learning. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule and monitor work assignments; to train and advise teaching staff regarding ESL students; and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in effective decision-making, problem-solving, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs students in English emphasizing the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, grammar, vocabulary acquisition and writing skills
  • Develops an EL Plan for each EL student, including needed classroom and standardized testing accommodations
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media to meet learning and social-emotional needs of ELs
  • Screens and identifies incoming students for eligibility for EL services
  • Coordinates educational activities, as required, with other professional staff, both school and non-school based, to maximize learning opportunities for ELs
  • Assesses student achievement on a continuous basis through the use of formal and informal testing, and maintains appropriate documentation for instructional and individual reporting purposes
  • Evaluates student performance in English for placement at the appropriate levels of EL instruction and service delivery
  • Monitors progress of ELs, makes recommendations for support, and provides EL services according to identified needs
  • Participates in staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned
  • Serves as a resource on EL-related matters for teachers, school administrators, instructional personnel, parents and others
  • Assists the division EL Coordinator in the review and development of curriculum, and collaborates with classroom teachers to ensure the inclusion of English Language Development (ELD) standards in the core curriculum subject matter
  • Assists in coordinating testing for state mandated tests (i.e. ACCESS; SOL tests) for ELs
  • Communicates regularly with the EL Coordinator, school administrators, and other EL teachers in order to optimize effectiveness of service delivery
  • Communicates regularly with families of ELs to maintain rapport and to discuss needs and progress of students
  • Collaborates with staff and families to connect language supports as needed to facilitate communication with non-English speaking families
  • Performs other duties as required.

Physical Requirements:

The duties are primarily carried out within the school setting. The role involves performing professional tasks that offer support and consultation for the assigned department or program. This work often entails frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. Certain assignments may have deadlines as they involve customizing and delivering programs to cater to diverse groups' needs. Additionally, employees may be called upon to provide emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as required.

SUPERVISION: Work is performed under the supervision of the School Principal, with oversight and support from the Director of Student Services.

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 200 days

  • The salary noted is based on the 2023-24 school year. Salaries will be updated following the 2024-25 budget confirmation.
