QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must hold a Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field from an accredited institution. Endorsement in Administration/Supervision is preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in education, counseling, or student support services is required. At least two years in a leadership or supervisory role is preferred. Virginia Licensure in School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field is required. Strong knowledge of student behavior supports, crisis intervention, and counseling techniques is essential. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are necessary to collaborate effectively with students, parents, staff, and community partners. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to fostering a positive school climate, promoting student well-being, and addressing the diverse needs of all students. The candidate should also exhibit excellent organizational and time management skills. A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is paramount.

DESCRIPTION

The Dean of Student Support Services plays an integral role in providing comprehensive support services to students, promoting positive behavior, and fostering a safe and inclusive school environment. This leadership position involves collaborating with school administrators, counselors, teachers, and community resources to address student needs and promote academic success.

GENERAL DUTIES (May not include all duties performed)

  • Develop and implement programs and initiatives to support the social-emotional, behavioral, and academic needs of students.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the school counseling department and behavior support systems, including developing and implementing procedures and interventions to address student support matters.
  • Coordinate crisis intervention and response efforts, including providing support to students during emergencies or critical incidents.
  • Provide oversight and collaborate with school counselors, behavior/mental health counselors, and other support staff to provide individual and group counseling services to students.
  • Conduct screenings and informal assessments to identify students in need of additional support services, such as counseling, mentoring, or academic interventions.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and community agencies to connect students and families with resources and support services.
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities for staff on topics related to behavior management, crisis intervention, and student support strategies.
  • Monitor and analyze student behavior data to identify trends, assess program effectiveness, and make data-informed decisions to improve student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with school administrators and stakeholders to develop and implement initiatives to promote positive behavior, prevent bullying, and create a safe and inclusive school climate.
  • Participate in school leadership team meetings, parent conferences, and other school-related activities as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Principal.

WORK CONDITIONS

Duties performed are typically in the school setting. Professional work is performed by providing support and consultative services for the assigned department/program. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking, and light lifting. The work environment may involve occasional exposure to challenging behavior, emotional situations, and crisis incidents. Some assignments are subject to deadlines inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of diverse groups. Work requires assignments involving a great deal of interactions with people as well as meeting frequent deadlines. Employees may be required to perform emergency and non-emergency health-related services for students as needed.

12 month position

  • The salary noted is based on the 2023-24 school year. Salaries will be updated following the 2024-25 budget confirmation.
