Hood County Communications Officer/911 Dispatcher

Definition

Disseminates all information received and ensures that the information is given to the proper channels in a professional and timely fashion. Determines priorities, dispatches law enforcement and other emergency units and maintains close contact with field units to monitor response progress and needed support requirements

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, dispatchers, and law enforcement agencies via telephone, radio, and computer aided dispatch system requiring law enforcement, emergency medical services (EMS) and/or fire departments and dispatches appropriate units and/or departments.

2. Input and update calls for service within the Spillman Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD)

3. Operate Pro-Q-A program and give lifesaving pre-arrival instructions including CPR instruction

4. Operate a multi-channel radio system and computer-based telephone system.

5. Input, modify, and access information stored within the TLETS (Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications System)

Other important duties and responsibilities

1. Maintain a variety of written and computer-based logs

2. Use various computer programs, databases, maps, and other resources to assist in data entry and information retrieval.

3. Maintain security and monitor security cameras within the Communications Area.

4. Required to activate, for public safety the emergency operations center (EOC), in times of disaster, nuclear accident or for civil defense.

Qualifications:

Knowledge Of:

1. County Geography and Mapping

Ability to:

1. React quickly and calmly in emergencies

2. Comprehend information whether written or verbal

3. Follow oral and written instructions and procedures

4. Operate standard office equipment such as computer keyboards, monitors, copiers, scanners, and telephones.

5. Adapt to changes in work situations and priorities

6. Reason/Analyze; use logic to identify and resolve problems

Special Requirements:

· High School Diploma or GED

· Ability to obtain Basic Telecommunicator License through Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE)

· Ability to obtain TCIC/NCIC and TLETS Certifications through Texas DPS

· Ability to obtain Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) through International Academies of Emergency Dispatch

Miscellaneous Information

Environmental Conditions: Climate Controlled Environment

Physical Conditions: Required to maintain physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time, lifting light to moderate materials. Ability to have intense attentiveness for prolonged period of time including during stressful situations.
