What's the role?

The role of the Corporate Safety Manager is pivotal in promoting and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment for employees. This position involves taking proactive measures to plan, develop, implement, and oversee safety programs and policies, ensuring compliance and adherence with all relevant safety regulations and fostering a culture of safety within the organization. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential to identify and mitigate potential hazards and risks, provide guidance and support on company events and building improvement projects, and deliver training and general safety assistance to employees.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement safety policies and procedures: Create and enforce safety protocols, guidelines, and procedures to ensure consistent safe working environments across each campus. Regularly review and update policies to keep current and align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.

  • Identify potential workplace hazards and risks through conducting regular audits, assessments and safety inspections of facilities, machinery, equipment, and personnel practices.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop and implement effective control measures and corrective actions to maintain consistency for all safety and environmental efforts throughout the company.

  • Develop and deliver safety training programs to employees, covering topics such as hazard recognition, emergency response, personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe work practices. Ensure compliance with training requirements and maintaining training records.

  • Foster a culture of safety by promoting awareness, accountability, and active participation in safety initiatives. Collaborate with management and employees to encourage and recognize safety-related behaviors and achievements.

  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, incident reports, training sessions, and other safety-related documentation. Generate reports and provide regular updates to stakeholders and management. Monitor and analyze safety metrics to identify trends, areas for improvement, and provide recommendations for effective safety strategies.

  • Continuously monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to workplace safety. Implement innovative approaches to enhance safety programs and education initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules. Continuously monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices related to workplace safety to ensure continuous improvement of our safety programs. Implement innovative approaches to enhance safety programs and initiatives.

  • Lead investigations into workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences. Compile incident reports and maintain accurate records for regulatory reporting purposes.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for safety-related queries and concerns from employees, management, and external stakeholders. Develop and maintain effective relationships with regulatory agencies and external safety organizations.

  • Provides information to top management on accidents, causes, and costs and recommends long-range accident reduction and cost containment objectives.

Bring Your Best! What this role needs:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety and Health, EHS; or related field of study.

  • Relevant certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) are advantageous.

  • Active Member in a Professional Safety Organization such as the National Safety Council (NSC), National Association of Safety Professionals (NASP), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

  • Minimum of 6 years in a progressive safety position with responsibilities for managing and leading a team of individuals. Experience in a corporate, manufacturing or EHS program in a fast-paced environment preferred.

  • Proven track record of attention to detail and organization skills, is proactive and self-motivated.

  • Experience writing and carrying out effective strategic safety initiatives and programs.

  • Understanding of local, state, and federal safety regulations and requirements including but not limited to NFPA, OSHA, NIOSH, ASME, and ANSI.

  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders.

  • Strong understanding of current risk assessment methodologies, incident investigation techniques, and safety program development.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage and influence employees at all levels of the organization.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities to identify hazards, assess risks, and propose effective control measures.

  • Proficiency in using safety management software, databases, and other relevant tools.

Pay Range - Start:

$82,670.00

Pay Range - End:

$153,530.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
