Hilo Medical Center is a nationally-recognized CMS 5-Star and largest hospital with over 1,600 employees, located on the east side of the island of Hawaii. This position is located in the Obstetrics Acute Unit of Hilo Medical Center. Hilo Medical Center is an acute and long-term care facility located on the Big Island of Hawaii, serving as the regional center, which also includes Hale Ho’ola Hamakua and Kau Hospital. It is one of nine (9) facilities within the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
The function of the Obstetrics Acute Unit is to provide nursing services involving prenatal care, disorders of pregnancy, complications of pregnancy, labor, delivery, as well as, care of the newborn and the mother, and for surgical gynecology patients.
The Registered Professional Nurse V, OB Unit Nurse Manager, is accountable for the 24-hour management of the clinical nursing practice and patient care in the Obstetrics Acute Unit. The position coordinates and directly supervises staff in managing the daily operations of the unit. This position has supervisory responsibilities over all shifts in the unit and performs other related duties as assigned. Management of the clinical nursing practice is also fulfilling all technical and clinical functions, requirements, skills and competencies of the staff and serve as a resource in all clinical matters. This individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective to the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age specific needs to provide assistance, as needed, for the care needed by the adult (19-64 years), to geriatric (65 years plus) patient groups.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE
Education: Graduated from an accredited school of nursing as demonstrated by the possession of a license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. While not required, graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
Experience: One and one-half (1 ½) year of professional nursing work experience, of which one (1) year must have been satisfactory work experience comparable to the next lower level in State service.
Supervisory Experience: One-half (1/2) year of professional nursing experience which included: (1) planning and directing the work of others; (2) assigning and review their work; (3) advising them on difficult problem areas; (4) timing and scheduling their work; and (5) training and developing employees.
Certification: BLS certification required within one (1) month of appointment.
Licensure: Possession of a current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Hawaii.
