Position Description: About Health Resources in Action
Health Resources in Action (HRiA) is a non-profit, public health consulting organization with a mission to help people live healthier lives and create healthy communities through prevention, health promotion, policy, and research. With an emphasis on community engagement and commitment to racial and healthy equity, HRiA has earned a national reputation as a leader in the fields of public health and social change. We work with diverse clients who share our vision of healthier communities, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, state and local health departments, hospitals, and private/corporate philanthropic entities.
Since its founding in 1957, HRiA has been at the forefront of public health, leading the way to promote healthier and more vibrant communities. Our work recognizes the impact of structural racism and social and economic factors on health outcomes. Our health equity framework centers racial equity and guides our work with communities, partners, and clients as well as our internal policies and processes. HRiA is also a member of the National Network of Public Health Institutes with over 40 affiliates across the US. HRiAs core services comprise five clusters: capacity building assistance (CBA), grantmaking for biomedical research and community health initiatives, research and evaluation, public health services, and health and racial equity. Our CBA services help people, organizations, and communities build the competencies, infrastructure, and resources necessary to improve public health and achieve health and racial equity. Our CBA portfolio is broad, encompassing training, technical assistance, and communication support, as well as strategic planning, facilitation, and leadership development services.
Opportunity
We are seeking a full-time Manager, Strategic Planning & Facilitation to join a growing team within our CBA Cluster focused on planning and organizational effectiveness. We are seeking a dynamic, engaging, and skilled facilitator and planner, with experience working with leaders and staff of community-based organizations, hospitals, health centers, health departments, and/or philanthropic organizations. The Manager will be adept at building trusting relationships, skilled at managing group dynamics, and confident in communicating and interacting with people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Position Description
The Manager will work collaboratively with a cross-disciplinary team to develop and deliver innovative and customized strategic planning, facilitation, and organizational development services for clients. They will manage and support a range of planning projects, including facilitating or supporting comprehensive strategic planning initiatives, strategic discussions or framework development, planning activities to support state or hospital community health needs assessments, and other coaching/ leadership development engagements to support organizational effectiveness. The Manager will also contribute to programmatic and organizational growth by contributing to proposals and scopes of work to secure new business within and beyond the portfolio, as well as share expertise, lessons learned, and insights with internal staff and external stakeholders.
This is a full-time, exempt position. The Program Manager may work remotely or in our Boston-based office. All HRiA staff who work in the Boston office and/or conduct in-person work activities must be up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations. The candidate will be required to show proof of vaccination upon hire (unless eligible for a religious or medical exemption). The salary range for this position is low- to mid-$60k, depending on experience and skills.
Duties and Responsibilities
Management
Working with Project Leads, help manage numerous concurrent projects and engagements, including coordinating the efforts of team members and consultants for assigned projects.
Develop, engage, and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and leaders, including clients, government agencies, and community members.
Assist with project planning, decision making, implementation, and evaluation.
Working with Project Leads, develop project budgets and work with HRiAs Administration & Finance team to monitor project and department budgets.
Coordinate and participate in team meetings, committees, and workgroups.
Project Work
Working with Project Leads, manage or contribute to strategic planning and facilitation projects, including conceptualization and design; assisting with establishing vision, goals and objectives; facilitating meetings and planning activities; providing ongoing support and follow up; and preparing summary materials and deliverables.
Contribute planning and facilitation experience and expertise to help guide individuals and teams toward goals and objectives.
Build and maintain strong, trusting, and effective relationships with clients and other key stakeholders.
Serve as primary point of contact for clients, providing guidance and technical assistance to ensure successful engagements and communicating regularly about project progress, challenges, and successes.
Develop, implement, and monitor project workplans to ensure timely completion of deliverables within budget and to clients satisfaction.
Prepare deliverables for clients including reports, presentations, summaries, evaluations, and correspondence.
Provide insight and guidance to help address challenges and barriers, and support and ensure continuous quality improvement activities.
Provide technical and content expertise on strategic planning, organizational and leadership development, and facilitation to support and enhance other projects and services at HRiA.
Maintain knowledge of significant trends and developments in services and use this to advance project objectives.
New Business Development
Working with Directors and the Managing Director, help identify and assess funding opportunities for new strategic planning, facilitation, coaching and leadership development and other projects at HRiA.
Assist with proposal writing and other new business development activities, such as helping develop scopes of work and budgets for contract extensions or preparing content for proposal for rebids or other new opportunities
Thought Leadership
Maintain and advance skills in project management, supervision, training and facilitation, health and racial equity, and related content areas.
Through experiential and formal professional development opportunities, build skills and expertise to become a trusted, informed professional in planning, strategic planning, facilitation, coaching and leadership development, health and racial equity, and/or related public health topics and approaches for HRiA, clients, and our communities.
Provide web content to share and promote work.
Present at conferences and events with senior staff, as appropriate.
Suggest ideas/improvements to project and organizational policies, procedures, and/or processes through participation in teams and committees.
HRiAs work hours are Monday Friday, 9:00 am 5:00 pm. As HRiA is a national organization, staff have the opportunity to flex their schedules to accommodate different time zones, client schedules and personal needs. Qualifications
The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
Bachelors degree and at least three years of professional experience working with community-based organizations or other public health or health care organizations. (In absence of Bachelors degree, five or more years of similar professional experience.)
Two years or more of relevant experience in planning and facilitation.
Knowledge of and ability to apply strategic planning concepts, frameworks, and processes to develop innovative, tailored solutions for various clients.
Demonstrated ability to develop and manage projects and engagements.
Ability to encourage, inspire, and mobilize others toward collective and strategic actions.
