We are looking for an outstanding candidate to lead the technical development, implementation, and engineering execution of various utility-scale renewable projects within the EPC team (PV & BESS) and is responsible for both the management and development of the overall engineering team. The position will report to the CEO. You will be responsible for the engineering deliverables of multiple projects throughout the design and construction stages internally and externally.

THE COMPANY

Established in 2014, Albuquerque-based Gridworks is a leading EPC contractor for utility-scale solar and battery storage, primarily across the southwest but expanding into other regions. The company is solidly positioned for continued success in the rapid growth of clean energy. We currently have over 1.6 GW of solar / battery energy storage projects under active EPC phases and are experiencing significant growth.

THE OPPORTUNITY

You will mentor and manage our talented engineering team to design and engineer utility-scale PV and energy storage projects, taking initial system concepts through to fully detailed construction-ready designs. You will collaborate with our experienced Innovation and Standards and construction teams to continue the development of new IP and implement Gridworks’ patented and patent-pending solutions to optimize utility-scale solar and battery energy storage project deployment. We are selective about which projects and clients we take on and do not pursue public RFPs.

THE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Work with company leadership/ownership to continue to build an industry-leading solar and battery storage engineering team with an emphasis on project quality and efficiency of deployment

Collaborate with Gridworks’ Innovation & Standards group in the technical development of innovative IP that optimizes the efficiency of constructing high-quality solar and energy storage projects

Support business development and estimating with project specification reviews

Work with the team to define processes & metrics, and plan and allocate resources across existing programs to ensure strategic alignment and needed technical training.

Build a quality culture of continuous improvement that enhances company efficiency and engineering quality

Review and reorganize, where needed, current engineering team processes to optimize performance

Contract and coordinate external engineering consultants

Lead project kickoff with the engineering team, allocating resources and setting deadlines

Lead team through drawing reviews of design packages to ensure compliance with project standards and contract specifications.

Approve 30/60/90 team deliverables prior to client submission

Oversee process to perform accurate system sizing calculations and system production reports

Collaborate with estimating and procurement to build detailed bills of materials based on system specifications. Manage submittal process flow.

Support and influence project team and clients to make informed decisions regarding design and project budgets

Research and implement value engineering and pre-fab concepts

Manage commissioning standards and process to achieve project completion

Provide support to project management and construction teams to ensure client expectations and internal deadlines are met

Your Background


  • Current permission to work in the United States required
  • B.S. degree in engineering, electrical or power systems preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License, strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience, preferably in construction
  • Minimum of 5 years of management experience leading an engineering team
  • Track record of successfully designing and building utility-scale solar and/or battery systems in the United States.
  • Demonstrated leadership of engineering teams greater than 10 members, with the ability to plan and delegate work for complex project execution
  • Familiarity/expertise in electrical power engineering principles with analytical tools (i.e. ETAP, SKM, CYME) related to load flow, arc flash, short circuit and power quality studies preferred
  • Background with relevant code standards (i.e. NEC, NFPA 855, IEEE, NESC)
  • Thorough knowledge of site assessment, interconnection, and permitting processes
  • Experience of participation in business development, estimating, EPC contracting and technical exhibits; preferred
  • Ability to manage and lead large technical organizations, including significant experience managing numerous suppliers and contractors
  • Have both long-term strategic perspective and near-term action orientation, strong desire to continuously improve and push limits
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong team player with high degree of professionalism in which one conducts self at all times
  • Willingness to travel domestically
