Gravie is Hiring a Senior Vice President, Underwriting Near Minneapolis, MN

Hi, we're Gravie. Our mission is to improve the way people purchase and access healthcare through innovative, consumer-centric health benefit solutions that people can actually use. Our industry-changing products and services are developed and delivered by a diverse group of unique people. We encourage you to be your authentic self - we like you that way.
A Little More About Us:
•We know healthcare. Our company was founded and is still led by industry veterans who have started and grown several market-leading companies in the space.
•We are quickly becoming one of the fastest growing health benefits companies in the country. We have received numerous awards and accolades, including Inc. Magazine Best in Business Gold Medal award in 2021, and JMP Securities Top 50 Private Companies in Insurtech in 2022.
•We have raised money from top tier investors who share the same long-term vision as we do of building an industry defining company that will endure over the long run. We are well capitalized.
•Our customers like us. Our revenue churn is in the low single digits, in an industry where greater than 20% churn is common.
•Our culture is unique. We tend to be non-hierarchical, merit-driven, opinionated but kind people who thrive working in a high-performance, fast-paced environment. People at Gravie care deeply about making a positive impact in the lives of the people we serve. We may not be the right place for everybody, but if you get energized by doing work every day that focuses on putting consumers at the front of the line, we could be a great place for you. It takes unique people and diverse perspectives to deliver our results. We encourage you to be your authentic self - we like you that way.
A Little more about the role :
Gravie has created an innovative approach to underwriting, which gives us a unique competitive edge, especially in the small to midsize business segment. In order to turn this into lasting strategic advantage, we are looking for an accomplished underwriting executive who will help us to scale and evolve the underwriting team, and operationalize the processes, controls, and systems that are needed to operate at scale. Reporting to Gravie's Chief Underwriter, you will partner with the executive, sales, account management, finance, and actuarial teams to continue imagining how Gravie's underwriting strategy differentiates us. And, you'll be responsible for the planning, implementation, and execution of that underwriting strategy, establishing metrics for oversight and measurement, and making the right changes and adjustments along the way.
YOU WILL:
•Lead underwriting teams in refining and perfecting underwriting strategies and practices for new and renewing books of business.
•Oversee achievement of underwriting business and financial goals like profitability, MLR, close ratio, quote efficiency and others. You're always seeking out opportunities to improve.
•Analyze each segment of a fast-growing underwriting team to ensure that the quality, performance and operational efficiency of the team supports our strategy and performance goals.
•Partner with Finance and Actuarial leadership to refine processes, tools, and systems that ensure alignment with business goals, including growth, and profitability.
•Support Gravie's sales and account management teams by developing relationships and establishing trust with key brokers and employers, serving as a thought leader in the industry and representing Gravie externally as needed.
•Use your judgment and experience to make financial decisions, balance top line growth with profitability that's in alignment with the company's financial goals and evaluate the effectiveness of our limits of authority guidelines.
•Build partnerships with Sales, Account Management and others, collaborating with anyone you need, and anyone who needs to provide amazing products and services to our customers.
•Represent Underwriting and the Chief Underwriting Officer in key meetings on topics like pricing reviews, new business reviews, and critical renewals.
•Support external broker and customer meetings.
•Demonstrate commitment to core Gravie competencies - authenticity, curiosity, creativity, empathy, and outcome orientation.
YOU BRING:
•Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Insurance or other related majors. We care less about what your diploma says and more about how your experiences have positioned you as an underwriting expert.
•10 years of relevant Underwriting Leadership/Management experience at health plan. (We care less about your title and more about the depth and breadth of your previous senior leadership experience, and how you've developed and implemented underwriting strategies)
•Seriously strong financial and business acumen.
•Successful demonstrations during previous experience going outside an underwriting manual, using creative strategies to advance the practice of underwriting.
•Strong demonstrated familiarity with underwriting self-funded, and level-funded health plans.
•Strong demonstrated familiarity with underwriting medical stop-loss risk.
•Excellent acumen around executive communication and negotiation skills.
•Strong technical underwriting experience/background.
•Commitment to leading and developing people and shaping an amazing underwriting team.
•Experience using technology to optimize underwriting performance and efficiencies.
Competitive pay is standard. Our unique benefits program is the gravy, i.e., the special sauce that sets our compensation package apart. In addition to standard benefits, Gravie's package includes alternative medicine coverage, flexible PTO, up to 16 weeks paid parental leave, paid holidays, cell phone reimbursement, education reimbursement, and 1 week of paid paw-ternity leave just to name a few.
