As the company Controller, you will be a key leadership figure responsible for overseeing and optimizing the financial operations of the business as you help the company navigate its continued growth. This role involves managing budgets, monitoring costs, analyzing and utilizing financial data, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies. You will work closely with our leadership team, Accounting Manager, Accounting Coordinator, other administrative team members, project managers, vendor partners, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure the financial success of construction projects and the company.

Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations, including WIP schedule, sales tax determination, job costing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, payroll, and cost accounting
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and company policies
  • Manage Accounting Manager, Accounting Coordinator, and A/R and A/P administrative support team members, ensuring a supportive environment with clarity and accountability.
  • Serve as the primary point person for GP Flooring with the company’s outsourced HR partner, ensuring oversight of efficiencies such as in payroll management and utilization of the HR partner’s services
  • Develop and maintain project budgets in collaboration with the executive team and project managers
  • Monitor project costs and expenses to ensure adherence to budgetary constraints
  • Review and analyze financial data related to construction projects, such as cost reports, billing, and payments
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and efficiency improvements
  • Identify challenges to solve and opportunities to consider, based on financial data
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for management and stakeholders
  • Provide variance analysis and explanations for deviations from budgeted amounts
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
  • Manage cash flow for company and specific construction projects, including monitoring cash inflows and outflows.
  • Forecast cash requirements and coordinate with the finance team to ensure adequate funding.
  • Review contracts and agreements related to construction projects to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Work with legal counsel to resolve any financial issues or discrepancies in contracts.
  • Work with CPA firm and industry consultants to ensure timely issuance of annual financial statements
  • Work with CPA firm on tax planning scenarios and calculations of estimated tax payments throughout year
  • Ensure accurate sales tax compliance with multiple states
  • Implement cost control measures to minimize project expenses without compromising quality.
  • Conduct regular cost reviews and audits to identify areas for cost reduction or optimization.
  • Identify and assess financial risks associated with construction projects.
  • Develop strategies to mitigate risks and ensure financial stability.
  • Collaborate with project managers, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to achieve project goals.
  • Communicate financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes related to construction accounting and finance.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial operations.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Master's degree or CPA designation preferred.
  • Proven experience in construction accounting or finance, with a minimum of 5 years in a similar role highly preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction accounting principles, including job costing, progress billing, WIP, and revenue recognition.
  • Proficiency in using accounting software and ERP systems, and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
