Good Samaritan Shelter is Hiring a Maintenance Assistant Near Santa Maria, CA

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position involves assisting in the general repair and ongoing maintenance of small machinery and facilities, as well as providing handyman services. The job requires a diverse skill set, including painting, landscaping, and general property maintenance. The primary responsibility of this position is to travel to various locations within the county to fulfill assigned work orders.

  • Responsible for completing the tasks outlined in the work orders.
  • Applying skills to maintain and repair buildings and grounds.
  • At the beginning of each workday, the employee will review and check the work orders assigned for the day
  • Performing maintenance on buildings, homes, shelters, grounds, lawns, and sprinkler systems.
  • Managing an appropriate inventory of equipment, supplies, and other necessary items for assigned duties.
  • Conducting minor repairs to the facility's plumbing, electrical system, and other miscellaneous items like doors, drywall and windows.
  • Adhering to company procedures and safety regulations, demonstrating the ability to work and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Work within allocated budgets for each work order, prioritizing maintenance needs, and finding cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensuring assigned equipment is in proper working order.
  • Operate company vehicles to travel to various locations/sites.
  • Maintain effective communication with facility managers, staff, and other stakeholders at each location to address maintenance issues promptly and effectively.
  • Responsible for promptly notifying the manager of any work orders that need to be submitted or supplies that need to be ordered.
  • Responsible for attending staff meetings, ensuring timely completion of training, and accurately completing timecards.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent: A minimum educational requirement to demonstrate basic literacy and communication skills..
  • Vocational training or certification in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience in general building maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication skills: Ability to effectively communicate with staff, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
  • Crisis intervention skills: Capacity to handle crisis situations and de-escalate conflicts.
  • Empathy and compassion: Demonstrating genuine care and understanding for individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Ability to work in a team: Collaboration and cooperation with other staff, volunteers, and external agencies.
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Google)

Required Qualifications:

Employment Eligibility Verification:

  • Must provide documentation to establish identity and employment eligibility in compliance with legal requirements. This may include a U.S. passport, Permanent Resident Card, or other acceptable forms of identification.

Negative Tuberculosis Test:

  • Must provide documentation of a recent negative tuberculosis (TB) test result to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Background Screening:

  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background screening, which may include criminal record checks, employment history verification, and reference checks.

Pre-Employment Drug Screening:

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening to ensure a drug-free workplace. A negative drug test result is required.

Driving Skills:

  • Possess strong driving skills and have a valid driver's license.
  • Driving is an essential function of the position, and a clean driving record may be required.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license or obtain one before the start of employment.

The work environment can be dynamic, with interactions with clients and other staff members occurring regularly. Homeless facilities maintenance staff need to be empathetic and compassionate, as they may encounter individuals facing difficult circumstances. Their tasks range from repairing homes and buildings to ensuring that grounds, lawns, and amenities are well-maintained. Collaboration with other support staff and adherence to safety and security protocols are essential to ensure the smooth functioning of the facility. Although the work can be challenging, knowing that their efforts contribute to improving the lives of those in need can be deeply fulfilling for maintenance staff in homeless facilities.

  • Maintenance staff often use hand tools and equipment that require good manual dexterity and coordination.
  • Facilities maintenance can be physically demanding and require stamina to perform tasks over extended periods.
