TRADES WORKER I - PUBLIC WORKS FM

This is a full-time position and receives all benefits afforded to regular employees.


Summary:
This position is responsible for performing skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work involving electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, roofing, and general repair/maintenance projects for County buildings, equipment, and related facilities.


Essential Job Functions: The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Ensures that operation, repair, maintenance, installation, remodeling, and/or construction of buildings, equipment, and systems are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
  • Responds to work orders or work requests to conduct various installation, repair, or maintenance projects as assigned; calculates/estimates time and material needed to complete projects; plans work activities to minimize down time in offices or other work areas; conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, and facilities to identify necessary repairs; reports potentially hazardous or dangerous situations to supervisor; responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance work to ensure proper operations and regular maintenance of systems and equipment.
  • Performs various tasks involving electrical and mechanical maintenance /repair projects, which may include troubleshooting electrical problems, installing/repairing light fixtures, installing electrical switches, maintaining electrical panels and breakers, repairing/maintaining electronic intercom systems, repairing/maintaining door locking systems, installing/maintaining security cameras /monitors and controllers, maintaining fire alarm systems, installing security glass, replacing motors and pumps, replacing pulleys and belts, servicing kitchen/laundry appliances, servicing/repairing pneumatic systems, maintaining uninterrupted power supply and backup generators, troubleshooting/repairing telephone equipment, installing electrical receptacles /outlets, replacing light bulbs and ballasts, replacing batteries, running conduit, or pulling wire/cabling to appropriate locations.
  • Performs various tasks involving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) maintenance/repair projects, which may include troubleshooting HVAC problems, servicing/repairing HVAC systems/un its, replacing window units, replacing thermostats , insulating pipes/lines, cleaning condenser coil s, or replacing filters.
  • Performs various tasks involving carpentry projects, which may include demolishing walls, constructing walls /doorways, hanging/finishing sheetrock, patching/repairing sheetrock, installing/replacing floors or floor tiles, replacing ceiling tiles, replacing windows, replacing doors, repairing /replacing locks, repairing beach walkways or steps, building roofs, repairing roofing surfaces and roof leaks, replacing rotting wood/boards, building/installing cabinetry, painting interior/exterior
    surfaces, or building barricades.
  • Performs various tasks involving plumbing maintenance /repair projects, which may include troubleshooting plumbing problems, maintaining water treatment stations , servicing main sewer grinder, installing/replacing plumbing fixtures , servicing plumbing fixtures, repairing toilets/sinks, unclogging or repairing drains and sewer lines, replacing plumbing components , installing/replacing pump motors and circulating motors, replacing pressure switches, laying water/irrigation lines, replacing broken pipes or pipelines , replacing sprinkler heads, or replacing seals /gaskets.
  • Performs general semi-skilled or manual work tasks associated with department projects, which may include replacing filters, replacing parts, cutting keys with key machine, forming concrete, pouring/finishing concrete, laying block, building drop in lets/catch basins, installing drainage pipes to drop inlets, repairing drainage inlets, assembling equipment/furniture, pressure-washing building surfaces, digging holes /trenches, climbing ladders, or lifting/moving heavy materials.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may include a utility truck/vehicle , dump truck , front end loader, forklift, tractor, bush hog, mower , motors , pumps, air compressor, generator, pressure washer, grinder, drill, drill press, circular saw, table saw, key machine, soldering iron, shovel, pick, sledge hammer , level, ladder, gauges, meters , tone generator, measuring devices, roofing tools , carpentry tools, plumbing tools, electrician tools , painting tools, mechanic tools , power tools , or hand tools.
  • Inspects /tests machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; adjusts, repairs or replacements; reports problem situations.
  • Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
  • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment , washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Ensures availability of adequate equipment, tools, and materials to complete projects; initiates requests for new /replacement materials.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, designs/drawings, daily work sheets, building inspection sheets, building assessments , service records , maintenance records , or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, service /maintenance records, building inspection sheets, building assessments, water treatment reports, user manuals , blueprints, schematics, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, building code books, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve , re or modify data; utilizes word processing, database , or other computer programs ; utilizes computer-aided design (CAD) software to create project drawings/designs ; utilizes specialized computer programs to monitor operations of HVAC equipment or other systems/equipment.
  • Assists in coordinating and monitoring work performed by outside contractors.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other departments, employees, con tractors/subcontractors, utility companies, vendors/
    suppliers, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations; maintains an awareness of new methods , trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
  • Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in building construction trades, such as electrical/electronic systems, mechanical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems, carpentry, and/or general construction work; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes building construction trades, such as electrical/electronic systems, mechanical systems, HVAC systems, plumbing systems,
carpentry, and/or general construction work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.


Certifications and/or Licenses:
Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License required.
