Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision from the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller performs a variety of accounting duties including planning, organizing, directing and supervising financial activities of Friendship Retirement Corporation and affiliated entities, including but not limited to preparing schedules, booking general journal entries, reviewing bank reconciliations, monitoring internal controls, assisting with audit, overseeing processing of accounts payable, receivable, operating and capital budgets, investments, monthly departmental budgets, bond requirements and loans, informational tax returns, and Medicare cost reports. The Controller will possess a genuine interest in and concern for geriatric, chronically ill and/or disabled persons. Must be able to fluently communicate in or to take or give direction or guidance in the English language. Provides the utmost integrity in carrying out accounting duties.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITY

Reports to the Chief Financial Officer. The Controller must effectively communicate with Senior Staff, co-workers, residents and provides leadership, direction, support and supervision to the accounting/finance department and the entire organization. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Regular attendance is considered an essential function of this position and is necessary for the efficient operation of the business.
  2. Manage and coordinate day-to-day accounting processes and month end close.
  3. Assists with the preparation of internal unaudited financial reports, the annual budget, including the preparation of statistical and operating reports for effective use by the department heads, and management teams.
  4. Assists CFO with the preparation and timely filing of all required tax returns.
  5. Assists CFO with the timely filing of all required 5500 employee benefit informational returns.
  6. Promotes good inter-department and intra-department working relationships according to an organizational plan and job descriptions that delineate responsibility and authority of the accounting department.
  7. Cooperates with the auditing firm and applicable intermediaries in preparation of annual audits and necessary annual reports, including reports to HUD, Medicare, DHS, Department of Insurance, and other financial institutions.
  8. Assists CFO preparing detailed analysis of operating statements and makes recommendations to the CFO to effectively reduce operating costs, increase revenues or improve overall financial management. 
  9. Assists CFO in making recommendations relative to pricing for residential and health care services.
  10. Assists with the quotes and renewal of professional and general liability insurance coverages, property insurance, auto insurance, directors and officer’s insurance and fidelity bond.
  11. Assists with multiple banking relationships for maintaining operating accounts, investment management, leasing and financing activities. 
  12. Assists the CFO and department heads in accounting for construction (capital projects), the working capital needs of FRC and all affiliated corporations; assists with ensuring adequate cash flow and develops prudent investments of surplus funds.
  13. Assists CFO with filing Medicare Cost Reports and Exception Reports in a timely manner to facilitate cash flow of Care Center. Assists Health Services with Medicare related issues.
  14. Assists Assisted Living Residential Services with HUD reporting issues and necessary annual reports.
  15. Implements department programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
  16. Assists CFO reviewing all contracts with vendors and contractors.
  17. At all times follow the Glencroft Handbook. Any and all performance evaluations will be conducted and submitted to the Human Resources office no later than the affected employee’s anniversary date.
  18. Provide documentation of all off-site education credit hours, CEU’s to the Human Resources office to be included in the appropriate personnel file.
  19. Responsible for the provision of professional/constructive feedback, coaching and mentoring of assigned employees, if any.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.
