Summer Sleepaway 2024 at Camp KaufmannHigh Adventure Director

Position DescriptionThe High Adventure Director will ensure that the archery and ropes course programs are safely and effectively implemented. They supervise High Adventure staff and ensure proper use and storage of equipment. They will act in accordance with the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and deliver engaging high-adventure activities with an energetic and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Collaborate with the Girl Scout Specialist, Program Director, and Assistant Camp Director to develop ropes course, climbing wall, and archery programming that is progressive, attainable, and appropriate for the ages and abilities of campers.
  • Coordinate and act as a lead project manager for the Climbing Adventure badge components of the High Adventure camp session using the GSUSA badge curriculum.
  • Collaborate with the Games and Sports Specialist for the Archery badge components of the Game On! camp sessions using the GSUSA badge curriculum.
  • Work independently while developing creative programming.
  • Take an active role in risk management and camper safety by following GSUSA, ACCT, ACA, and NYSDOH standards and regulations for challenge courses; training provided.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate through written assessments ropes and archery staff.
  • Conduct in-service training of staff on a weekly basis to ensure safety skills, stamina, and knowledge.
  • Maintain the high ropes course, climbing wall, low ropes course, and archery range, including conducting daily inspections of all equipment for safety, good repair, and cleanliness.
  • Maintain records of equipment in the Ropes Course Equipment Log on a daily basis.
  • Maintain a clean and organized program area, including the activity area’s first aid kit and the inventory of supplies and equipment necessary for programs.
  • Be fully prepared and organized for each group, ensuring a safe and engaging environment.
  • Provide support to Unit Managers, Unit Counselors, and their Girl Scouts as they complete badge work and prepare their Girl Scouts for the Thursday evening badge work showcase.
  • Mentor Counselors-in-Training (CITs) who will assist in facilitating programs.
  • Assist campers and guide staff in emergency situations; training provided.
  • Report and document all incidents/accidents and maintenance issues to the Assistant Camp Director and/or Camp Property Manager.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Model and teach good health practices for all staff and campers.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Meet and communicate with the Assistant Camp Director daily.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Assistant Camp Director and Camp Director. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Must attend and pass all required archery and ropes course trainings.
  • Minimum of 1-year experience working with youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage challenging behavioral situations with youth effectively.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to provide care to children and peers in an outdoor environment.
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Candidates must live locally or on-site and be available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1-year documented experience or training in ropes course facilitation from a recognized organization.
  • At least 1-year experience supervising adults.
  • Experience or interest in the Girl Scout Program and Leadership Experience.

Physical DemandsThe physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time while leading programming.
  • Bending, crouching, kneeling, and climbing may all be a part of daily tasks.

Required

  • Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.

Compensation

  • $100 - $130 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications).
  •  Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week, except July 6th.
