Summer Sleepaway 2024 at Camp Kaufmann
Head Cook

Position Description
The Head Cook will oversee kitchen staff to ensure the preparation and timely serving of all camp meals and the maintenance of a consistently clean, safe work environment. They will act in accordance with the New York Department of Health (NYDOH), Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), and the American Camp Association (ACA) standards while being passionate about the mission of Girl Scouting and the positive impact of camp.

Responsibilities

  • Directly implement kitchen and dining hall procedures and policies to ensure that the camp meets ACA and NYSDOH standards.
  • Work within the food budget to meal plan and place food orders with the approval of the Camp Director.
  • Consistently track inventory and check food deliveries against food orders to make sure all items have been accounted for.
  • Responsible for the preparation and on-time serving of all meals, including 3 meals a day plus snacks and cookout orders.
  • Reports to the Camp Director and closely collaborates with the Dining Hall Manager to run safe, efficient mealtimes.
  • Works closely with the Health Team to accommodate campers and staff with dietary restrictions, special needs, or food allergies while maintaining confidentiality in compliance with HIPPA.
  • Work with Camp Leadership and Program Teams to coordinate special event meals.
  • Manage temperature charting procedure for all refrigerators and freezers across camp.
  • Work with Camp Leadership and other team members to carry out staff week training schedule, including dining hall procedures and expectations.
  • Oversee and assist with all aspects of maintaining a clean kitchen (i.e., washing equipment, removal of trash, sweeping/mopping of floor, etc.)
  • Plan daily work schedules for kitchen staff and work with the Dining Hall Manager for front kitchen staff schedules.
  • Supervise and submit a written evaluation for the following direct reports: Assistant Cook, Prep Cook, Kitchen Aides, and Dishwashers.
  • Assist campers and guide staff in emergency situations; training provided.
  • Enthusiastically participate in all aspects of camp, including staff training, team building, and debriefing.
  • Subscribe to the mission and values of the Girl Scouts by becoming a member.
  • Provide excellent customer service to other staff members, campers, caregivers, and other visitors to camp.
  • Demonstrate quick thinking and sound problem-solving techniques.
  • Excellent communicator, calm under pressure, and works as a team player.
  • Set a good example for campers and staff regarding good health practices, cleanliness, punctuality, respect, appropriate language, attire, etc.
  • Comply with all personnel policies communicated in staff training and staff manual.
  • Report all maintenance issues to the Property Manager.
  • Meet and communicate with the Camp Director daily.
  • Submit an end-of-summer final report of all inventories and records.
  • Accept other tasks and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Property Manager, Camp Director or VP of Programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Be at least 25 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Holds required certifications or is willing to obtain required certifications on Food Handlers License, kitchen equipment-specific training, etc.
  • Experience in quality and quantity cooking, food managing, and maintaining food inventory within budget.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • At least 3 years in operating a full working kitchen.
  • Familiarity with all NYSDOH, OSHA, and ACA regulations, laws.
  • Ability to operate industrial/restaurant-grade kitchen equipment.
  • Clearance through the Sex Offender Registry and Criminal Background Check.
  • Willingness to prioritize the needs of Girl Scouts and Camp Kaufmann.
  • Desire and ability to work with, relate to youth and peers, in an outdoor environment.
  • Available to work for the entire summer season (June 23rd – August 11th).
  • The acceptance and understanding that employment is at a sleepaway (overnight) camp and that work hours are irregular. Local candidates can commute, all other candidates must live on-site.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, integrity, self-control, and an ability to adapt well to changing and challenging situations.
  • Possess the strength and endurance required to succeed in a Sleepaway camp environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating any or all of the following: industrial mixer, braiser, slicer, food processor, warming/chilling cabinets, etc.
  • Holds current CPR and First Aid certification.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Good health and the stamina necessary to work in a camp setting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

Required
Candidates must be available to attend ALL trainings as needed (June 23rd – July 6th) in preparation for the summer program and work for the ENTIRE 5 weeks of camp and clean up (July 7th – August 11th). Additional certification classes may also be required. Those applicants who cannot attend these training dates will NOT be considered.

Optional: Year-round, seasonal weekend work also available.

Compensation

  • $250 - $300 per diem rate range (based on experience and certifications). 
  • Room and board while at camp.
  • Time off: Friday evening to Saturday evening each week.
